Description: Not many restaurants have a loyalty scheme, which just goes to show how very loyal Rowley's long-time regulars happen to be. The room is traditionally British, but also informal and relaxed. The menu changes monthly, and always features Rowley's tremendously good char-grilled entrecote steak or breast of Sussex chicken with herb and butter sauce and endless chips. The trad Caeser salad is also terrific. Short, intelligent wine list and the sun-dried tomato chutney served with the cheese is just right. Great for business lunches, or pre- or post-theatre.

We visited Rowleys again, this was our second time, on valantine's day, we booked a table for 16:30 hrs but arrived early at 15:00 hrs due to the heavy rain.
We got a very warm and friendly welcome, offered a various tables, the food was excellent, the portions were large and was the food was hot. we had the chateaubriand which was excellent and I loved the Rowleys special sauce.
We had a three courses meal with wine and drinks, it wasn't cheap but was lovely and well worth the money.
Already planning our next visit with the family.

My wife and I ate here 2 days before the holiday, during lunch. We loved Rowley's years ago for it's think entrecôte Geneva Cafe de Paris, prepared at the table in a special sauce. This was not what we got - instead we had a standard entrecôte covered in buttery goo. The steal was OK, but it was not Rowleys.

Go to Hawkmoor for the £22.50 Steak Frites lunch, including starter. You set a lovely salad, 250gm rib eye and triple cooked chips. At Rowleys, the salad would cost a fiver, and £25 for the steak/frites. No comparison on cost, quality or service.

The service was pretty average. It was inexplicably slow, considering this is what they do.

So if you want that kind of lunch, there are much better alternatives.

Ate here a few weeks ago for a business lunch. For steak, (all you can eat) chips, a nice dessert and staff who do not intrude this was great. It is well located for the west end and was not too overpriced considering the location.

The staff looked after us well, we were not rushed and the quality of the food was good. I would eat here again for a business lunch.

The actual restaurant is in an old butchers shop, complete with amazing painted tiles, and an authentic feel, really a lovely place. The place was fairly empty on a Thursday night and we got sat but the front window, which was fine except for a cold blast everytime the door opened. When I pointed this out, the waiter said it's fine with the heater on, and ignored my request for another table, even though there were plenty available.

We ordered the special Chateaubriand deal at £39 for two (booked through Opentable), and a single filet steak at £28. The meat, served in a hot skillet was really good, tender and tasty and cooked very rare as requested. However, the portions are tiny.....had we paid the full £68 for the Chateaubriand it would have been appalling. I reckon we got 250g, perhaps 300g for two people, which equated to 3 slices each. The filet steak was a little better, but I reckon 150g tops. Put it like this, for 3 people all the meat fitted into a small metal skillet of about 30com diameter, and that included two tomato halves and two pots of garlic butter.

The reason I share all these dimensions and prices is to illustrate that although the meat was excellent, it was not good value for the price and thus disappointing. Fortunately the chips were great, and unlimited, but such a shame the steak sizes are so mean.

I would also point out that the staff, although polite and performed their function well, were disinterested and ambivalent, not making you feel welcome or special as a customer at all with almost no personal engagement, no direct eye contact, and no smiles. This, also, is a pity and with so many other great steak restaurants around is why this is not a place I will be returning to.

If you are looking for a straightforward steak and frites meal, this is the place. The chateaubriand was really tender, the ambience busy but sophisticated and the service faultless - the 2 waiters we're welcoming, charming and attentive.
I disagree with a previous reviewer who seems to suggest that it's downmarket to offer ketchup - not when it is served by the waiter from a dish alongside a full range of mustards in bowls, after all even posh burger places offer ketchup!
The house wine by the glass was generous and good.
We will be back!
