Description: Bevis Marks is a bustling kosher restaurant situated in the busy heart of the City of London. Beautifully modern, Bevis Marks is decorated with real taste, the understated, expensive looking dcor just right for the typical clientele from the local financial institutions and offering a sophisticated setting for the more intimate of occasions. Head Chef Anthony Broster has a fine pedigree, bringing his food skills with him from no less than Smiths of Smithfield and giving traditional British dishes and kosher classics a contemporary gourmet slant while maintaining all the beloved tradition of Jewish favourites. Interesting features like a non-dairy dessert list and a surprisingly varied and high quality (but still all kosher) wine list featuring the best of Israeli boutique vineyards, mark Bevis Marks as an exciting member of the City restaurant scene with something different to offer.

“Terribly disappointed. ”
Reviewed 21 January 2014 via mobile

As a very upscale, highly recommended restaurant, we expect much more. The wait staff was snobbish, and Barely spoke English. The food was at the best of times good, with many dishes being way way off the mark. The menu looks incredible, but can b done so much better. One dish was very very good :) but the rest was so eh that I can't even remember what it was. But I do remember that we had to combine too dishes to come up with that one. Oh the liver was very good. The right flavors and textures all well done. Of the only things keeping this restuarant above one star

“I'd return”
Reviewed 16 January 2014

The service at Bevis Marks the Restaurant was prompt, professional and correct. The rye bread was light and moist - I haven't tasted rye bread like that in years. However, we would have had to ask for a second piece.

The starters were very good. She had the soused mackerel salad and was surprised by the generous amount of fish in it. I resisted the traditional chicken soup - after all, we'd gone to sample modern Kosher fine dining - and ordered the shredded salt-beef with Thai herb, noodle and peanut salad, which was a wonderful contrast of tastes and textures.

She had the vegetable caponata, which was disappointing: she said it was what you would expect from a girlfriend mid-week, after work. Because they were out of duck breast, I had the chef's special, which was a large onglet with what was described as rosti. The meat was superb, tender, juicy and tasty and the shallot sauce was good. The "rosti" looked like soggy chips and tasted slightly over-caramelised. No green leafy vegetable was available, nor could they provide a green salad. We had eaten too much already to be able to manage a dessert.

I wouldn't want to comment on the ambience, because the downstairs area was occupied by an event - perhaps 20% of the guests required Kosher food - or the wine list, because I'd left my glasses at home. We drank a nice French Cabernet Sauvignon.

The restaurant also serves a small selection of bar meals for under a tenner.

This was without question the best Kosher meal I have ever had in London, by a large margin. If you don't require Kosher food and aren't in the vicinity of Aldgate, you could do better for this kind of money.

“Very refined kosher dining”
Reviewed 17 December 2013

Lovely meal in their new location. Pricey, but hey! It's kosher. The restaurant can be tricky to find, but use the Aldgate tube stop and if you pick the right exit (which I didn't) you're only a 2 minute walk away.

“Best Upscale Kosher Restaurant in London”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

As far as Kosher business dining goes in London, there are very few options - it's nothing like NY, Paris or Israel. In some cities, this means that a mediocre place will open, banking on a captive market. Not so Bevis Marks.

I took a vegetarian business associate here for lunch, and he was quite happy with the options available to him - I had a shredded salt beef starter, followed by lamb cutlets, which were both excellent. I would very strongly suggest the shredded salt beef starter (this was always my favourite before they moved premises from the Bevis Marks Synagogue site).

If you want somewhere to take any level of business associate or client, you will not be disappointed. Look out for a big bill (roughly £50+ per person for three courses plus drinks), but you get what you pay for.
