Tucked away in a quiet side road off Hampstead tube station and the high street, this pub cum restaurant is located in a grand villa. The locations ensures that there are mostly locals and the place preserves style and atmosphere. We came here on a Friday evening for a dinner in the restaurant. Generally it is not too difficult to make a reservation but it is recommended. The restaurant is upstairs, and it feels like being invited into a stylish North London home, with several reception areas. We were welcomed and the wairtrss offered water and ask if we would like an aperitiv (we didn’t but always like to be offered one and indeed sometimes consider one). We chose anchovy, dill and crème fraiche potato salad and the tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad with toasted pumpkin seeds. Both were starters and light and fresh. I particularly liked the anchovies. Then haddock and the 28 day rib eye steak (plus chips). Chips were very good but not outstanding. The rib eye instead was very very good, and I enjoyed every bite. Tender, and cooked as it should be, rare-medium – just great. The dessert highlight was the passion fruit pavlova with mango cream (a dream of a creamy, yet zesty dessert) whilst the crème brulee was ok, could not compete with this.
All that came with a friendly, attentive service and a bill in the region of £90 including tip and a carafe of a pleasant white wine. This is a friendly place which makes feel guests comfortable and relaxed – we will come again.
