A very safe menu with a large number of cooked dishes and rice that's never overcooked but can be a bit underseasoned. Nevertheless, the quality is dependable and it all tastes good. It's also the best of its type for a decent distance.

Went here on a rainy evening to satisfy our Japanese food craving and came away very pleased.

Service was polite and very quick. We ordered the chef's special sushi and sashimi platter which was excellent; thick slices of good quality fish, we were very happy to be given fatty tuna! Our mains came quickly. The Udon was a little al dente for my liking but the vegetable tempura was good. The katsu was crispy and the accompanying salad came with a nice sesame based dressing. All flavours were just as you would want for these well know dishes.

We thought the pricing was very good, cheaper than the average and will be back again.

If mass produced supermarket sushi is putting you off Japanese food head to Makiyaki. The sushi here is excellent but if bored of that then the eel on rice is succulent and meaty and the seaweed salad (wakame) is delightful both in terms of texture and flavour.

Extract: 'And onto the maki (sushi rolls). There’s a long list available to choose from, with such creative names as ‘scallop volcano’, ‘spider’, ‘rock ‘n roll’ and ‘999’, the latter an incarnation with the word ‘spicy’ present twice in its short menu description and so its name perhaps an indication of the dialling action required after consumption. We of course selected Lion King, a ‘California roll with salmon, wrapped and baked’. What we were presented with on an unfurled piece of tin foil was hot cooked salmon, wrapped in soft rice that had absorbed the ambrosial slightly sweet and spicy sauce it was doused in, topped with roe and something else we couldn’t quite decipher (or at least bring ourselves to accept our initial analysis of).'

Local to our home, we visit Makiyaki pretty regularly and are never disappointed with the food or the service. Recommend the Couple's Combo and the Spicy California Rolls - delicious.
