Review of Via Limehouse

I didn't have much expectations for this hostel before I turned up but it was awful. I was in a 12 mixed room. It was extremely crowded and the beds wobbled like crazy. Our on suit had a broken toilet seat and no toilet paper for the whole of my visit nd it was just unsanitary. Won't be coming back.

We got a room for 2 with private bathroom at level 1. Stayed3 nights with zero house keeping throughout 3 nights. We have to informed front desk that the toilet paper has run out when we went out in the morning and we expected housekeeping when they refill the toilet roll...... but not. When we returned in the evening, what we see is a roll of toilet paper placed on top of the toilet lid. They don't even bother to place it back in the toilet roll holder. There is no rack in the bathroom so you leave the toiletries on the floor. Basin is small and no extra space to put even your travel size toothpaste beside the basin . And because the toilet roll holder is locked, we cannot replace it but to place the roll on our bed or on the floor of bedroom. The trash bin remain full and floor remain dirty ( human hair and dirt from shoes).

Zero sound proof as you can hear clearly the conversation from the canteen , walk way etc. even at 10pm. Be prepared to plug your ear when the other were inconsiderate. But again they were not shouting but we still can hear clearly.

5-7 min walk from train station (limehouse stop). And there is a tesco express on the way from train station to hostel. Can pick up drinks snack or fruits. Bring your own bag.

Zero hanger in the bathroom, so don't expect to hang clothes or towel. In the bedroom there is no desk nor rack so you can just drop your watches, wallet etc on the floor. There is only one hanger on the wall in the bedroom so you and your partner will fight for the hanger.

Good: cheap, walking distance to train station, acceptable mattress (quite soft).
Bad: noisy, bad service (no housekeeping), inconvenient (no rack, no hanger).
cleanliness: acceptable upon check in but if you are staying for more than a night be prepared to empty your own trash or live with it.

This place is a scam according to the photos advertised. The common rooms are exactly like the photos posted online, however the photos of the bathrooms and bedrooms are not! Most dorm rooms have a 3bed bunk which they did not advertise. The ensuites have no circulation so it gets stuffy and humid. The rooms are very very small and you have hardly any space to place your bags anywhere except on your bed. The room has windows but very very small so the room does not get much air circulation. The hostel also hosted people of all ages, from school kids to older men up the age of 80 which made us feel uncomfortable. There is a tiny kitchen with no equipment except for 2 pans (you'd have to buy your own knives etc) shared between everyone which gets super messy and you're responsible for buying your own dishwashing liquid. The kitchen was messy because they do not monitor who uses it. We complained to reception and they said 'its impossible to monitor so we cannot be responsible to clean / make sure its a clean kitchen'.

Despite this, the staff were OK however it is clear they're there because they have to be - not because they want to be. The wifi was good but only in the common room - there is in-room wifi but very weak at times.

Room tip: I suggest you go for a private room - because the dorm rooms are stuffy, humid and has a bad smell.

It was only a short walk from the DLR Line Limehouse stop, making it convenient to get to Westminster and London City Airport. The location also puts it close to Greenwich. It was about what you would expect from a hostel, so its what you need it to be if you're traveling in London.

My friends and I booked this hostel for a 4 bed dorm based purely on the price, I wish we had paid a bit extra and stayed in a budget hotel. It has to be the dirtiest hostel we have ever stayed in. The first morning the cleaner woke us up by knocking once then walking straight into our room to change the bins! We then didn't see her for the rest of our time there, someone had been sick in the communal sink and it wasn't cleaned properly, I'm guessing the same person left the marks in the toilet that also weren't cleaned away! We left our luggage on our final day for a couple of hours and it smelt awful in there, we then saw that there was lots of rotting food in there which was causing the stench! Pay a bit extra to be somewhere cleaner with friendlier staff!

I booked a package at the hostel for 8 nights, in march 2017. End up staying for 6 only.

To start at the door, there is absolutely no control nor security of who walks in to common areas. I saw many people who appear to be homeless, many guys that you could tell were 100% on drugs just hanging out in the main area. Also MANY people, in many different nights, rolling a joint in the middle of the tables. One of my roomates said she even saw people doing heavier drugs in there, but I can't confirm that.

Still in the main area, which basically has some couchs, a tv and large tables, the area is total chaos. Again, since there's no security, you'll bump into all kinds of drunk characters, including one, last friday, being arrested right there, because he attacked another traveler with a glass bottle, in the middle of the main area. I saw the whole thing happening and the poor girl at the reception didn't even knew what to do.

They offer you a kitchen, but they don't even offer you dish soap to handle the utensils in there. Their excuse is that the place is too low cost to have it.
It's absolutely disgusting. Not to mention food being stolen from the fridge.

At first, I was booked for a 9 bed shared dorm. As soon as I walked in and saw the kind of people in there, I upgraded to a female only 6 bed dorm for 53 extra pounds. You read right: 53 pounds just for the upgrade.

The bedroom was alright. They had sheets which appeared to be clean, and pillowcase. You also get an usb plug each bed, which is pretty usual in other hostels.
The bathroom (en suite) was not terrible. The shower works on the same system as the taps: you press a button and get 50 seconds of water. Then it stops and you gotta press it again, which makes your shower experience quite hard considering it's just a tiny shower area you can barely move.

The staff is alright. They're clearly not happy on their jobs - and I got this told by two of them, but they try to be at least polite. I got a refund from the manager for the nights I decided to leave, and the staff member took literally half an hour just to make it, even with me telling him I had a flight to catch and I was late.

Long story short: it's not a good place at all. If it was cheaper, then it could be a good "you get what you paid for". But it's beyond expensive for hostels levels, not safe at all and was 100% not worth it.

The one and only good point is the location, which is at zone 2, right next to the DLR station and many bus stops. Also has a Tesco and some pubs within a walking distance.
