Owner description: At Saltholme, you'll find a world of amazing wildlife thriving right in the middle of the Tees Valley's heavy industry.Surprising, isn't it? But this is a brilliant place for wildlife – and for you! Come and explore the state- of-the-art visitor centre with panoramic views of the reserve and its industrial backdrop. Follow your nose to the café to sample freshly brewed coffee and home-cooked meals, and then stop off in the shop for a bit of retail therapy.Get outdoors with the family to explore the discovery zone and run, jump and clamber through the adventure playground. If you fancy relaxing, seek out a bench in the tranquil wildlife garden or venture to the far reaches of the reserve for some quiet time with nature. However you want to spend your time at Saltholme, you're sure to fall in love with the place and come back time and time again.

4 quid per car. Lovely staff. Nice play area. Picnic tables. Kids loved the walk round and seeing the lambs. Also with seaton down the road a trip to the beach finished the day nicely.

You go through an area of industrialisation on the decline and if you are lucky to be there when there are lots of birds its even more special. The parking area is stones so if you call it just nip into the shop its not great wearing fancy shoes, but, that's not the point of the place - staff helpful although its always welcome to have a bit more gluten free choice for food in café. They do really well with different events throughout the year to encourage people so go along!

Very slick operation, friendly staff and very knowledgeable volunteers in the hides. Great visitor centre only slight let down was the cafe had run out of a couple of options but ghe meal was excellent value.

This place is well worth a visit, we are a family of 5 (children aged 8, 5 and 1) and we spent a good few hours here. There are flat walks to do, and the kids loved going in the hides to watch the birds. Our older two children went in the playground and enjoyed it. When we visited there were (free) crafts on offer for the children to do (sticking, gluing and painting) and toys and books for our toddler. We ate in the café, the kids sandwich box was very good value.
One tip for those with babies - Saltholme have all-terrain pushchairs that you can borrow. You don't necessarily need the all-terrain feature, we walked round with a Maclaren Quest stoller with no problems at all, but there are sheep droppings all over the paths and our stroller got very dirty. I hate having dirty pushchairs, but aside from that we then had to find plastic bags to cover our pram wheels so that the contents of our car boot did not get covered in unhygienic dirt. Unfortunately we set off on our walk via the door in the shop and did not spot the pushchairs available to borrow until we returned via the back door!
There were some lovely things in the shop, and a sale on when we visited on 2nd Jan.
