Description: This has been a public house for more than a century. Mostly, the three-storey building (which extends along Victoria Road) was the Empire (not to be confused with the nearby Empire Theatre-now a nightclub). The Empire was originally named the Empire Hotel. The building is recorded in the 1891 census as the Swatters Carr Hotel Public House - Swatters (or Swathers) Carr after the isolated farmhouse, first recorded on the map dated 1618.

Typical Weatherspoons - decent food at a decent price. Thursday Curry nights can't be beaten. Friendly bar staff and great place to have drinks before a night out.

“Another great pub.”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

The Swatters Car is another fine example of the Wetherspoon pubs. This pub in Middlesbrough has had various names and styles over the years and now has the familiar Wetherspoon standards. We often start our nights in town in the Swatters Carr along with what seems like half of the local population. The range of beers from around the world along with some fine real ales from all over the UK leave you spoilt for choice. My current choice is the German wheat beer Erdinger. The Swatters Carr food is the national standard Wetherspoon menu, good quick cheap food that often comes with a drink almost of your choice. Pleasant door staff make for a safe and friendly atmosphere, what more is there to want.

“Unbeatable breakfast”
Reviewed 18 May 2014 via mobile

How do they do it? The food and the service is so good, yet the price is so low! Have been here for both Sunday morning, recovery breakfast and Saturday night lash up; you just can't beat it for either, especially if you are early enough on Saturday night to bagsy a table. A wide range of beers on tap and a good selection of spirits all at fantastic prices. And the sausages on the breakfast are excellent. Go. You won't regret it.

“Gorgeous for the price”
Reviewed 8 March 2014 via mobile

Have been here several times but most recently for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Whilst it was quiet, there was still a nice atmosphere and the staff were very friendly despite the fact it was before 10am. I got the vegetarian sausage roll with a side of hash brown and my partner got the eggs with hollandaise sauce. Both were delicious and our entire bill including two drinks came to £7. Can't fault it!
