Stayed here a few times.

Rooms are basic but ok.
The bathrooms need updating, showers inconsistent and some generally need a good clean.

Room Service isn't the best. The room service menu seems to have changed recently, for the worse. Not enough selection of salads, all just consist of a type of meat (Ham, Chicken or Fish) and rocket. Even the side salad is simply 'Rocket Salad'. The Fish and Chips is £15.00, with the added tray charge (£3.00) taking it to £18.00, it's an absolute rip off!

There is an onsite gym, which is shared with local gym users, is pretty good as it's included in the room rate.

All in all not bad for the money but massive room for improvement.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor about your recent stay here at The Sporting Lodge Inn, Middlesbrough.

I am sorry that you feel that the changes to the Room Service menu have not added value. All of the food menu's in the Hotel were changed in October and have created positive feedback from both residents and non-residents alike. I will however pass your comments about the salads on to the Head Chef.

With regards to the Bathrooms in the bedrooms, I will feed your comments back to the Senior team.

Yours sincerely,

I am writing with regards to the comments that you posted on Trip Advisor with regards to your recent stay here at the Sporting Lodge Inn, Middlesbrough.

It is nice to hear that you had an enjoyable time here at the Hotel when attending a Wedding recently.

Please accept my apologies for the fact that you could smell smoke in your room. We are a
non-smoking Hotel, however it is difficult on occasions to ensure that no-one is smoking in our rooms. If it is identified that a guest has been smoking in a room, we endeavour to ensure that the room is adequately cleaned and aired once the guest has left.

I trust that this will not deter you from using the Hotel again in the future.

Stayed here for two nights with work recently, so had no choice of booking. The hotel, on approach, seems fine- loads of car parking space and a fantastic leisure centre guests are able to use.

However, after check-in the hotel dramatically goes downhill. The lobby presentation is not consistent with the rest of the hotel- dont be fooled! The whole place is in dire need of refurbishment. The carpets are worn, the bathroom old. The beds were fine, there is a tv and sufficient room which was a positive.

The room service menu is very pricey for this area, and the food always arrived cold having had no cover on it from the restaurant- a trip which involves going outside. Basics? I should think this would be covered with a £3 tray charge! The food is quite nice once you get it, though.

Overall this place needs a bit of a revamp and reshuffle which would make it much better. You can't really argue with the price though.

Room Tip: Ask for one on the other side to the courtyard when they have functions otherwise you will get Lady...

I am writing with regards to the review that you posted on Trip Advisor with regards to your recent stay at Sporting Lodge Inn, Middlesbrough.

With reference to your comments about the Hotel being in dire need of refurbishment. We have recently replaced all of the Televisions in the Hotel with flat screen televisions and are gradually replacing Windows, Beds and Carpets. I am sorry that you did not feel that this was the case in the room in which you had stayed.

You mention that the staff have to go outside when bringing Room Service meals to the rooms, this is not the case. There are two routes whereby the staff can access the rooms internally from the Kitchen. I have addressed your comments about the food not being covered and can only apologise that this was the case on the occasion that you stayed with us, I am however glad that you enjoyed the food that you had.

I hope that this experience will not deter you from using the Sporting Lodge Inn, Middlesbrough again in the future.

I stayed here during a business trip to Middlesbrough. it is actually the 4th occasion I have used the hotel however the place is now becoming a little tired and is in desperate need of a little improvement.. Paintwork in the room was dirty and marked and the toilet was leaking as the floor was wet and smelt of urine..The room no way represented something of a 4 star standard. The restaurant has also changed and gone all posh trying to obviously appeal to the captive audience of the hotel user however the menu is now less appealing and the atmosphere has dropped. The positive side however is the food does taste half decent if you can afford a meal but the lighting is poor as I struggled to see my what I was eating. You do however have the option of sitting with the locals if you want a greater choice if you are on a budget but be warned you can't have anything after 8pm from the bar menu so dig deep or pick from the specials menu..

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor about your recent stay here at Sporting Lodge, Middlesbrough.

I am sorry to read of your disappointment with your most recent stay. We have been updating the Hotel, by installing a new Wifi system throughout the property and with new Windows, Carpets and Curtains in the rooms. We are endeavouring to continue with this programme through the remaining bedrooms, of which will take a period of time.

I have passed your comments about the toilet in your bedroom to both the Housekeeping and Maintenance teams and can only apologise that you experienced this during your stay.

The new Head Chef launched a new extensive Restaurant menu on 8th October, which is available in all areas of the Hotel until 10pm each evening and is reasonably priced.

I hope that this experience will not deter you from visiting the hotel again in the future.

Yours faithfully,

Louise Waters

Title says it all. Looks quite impressive as you draw up and see the 1st floor gym with floor to ceiling windows and high tech fitness equipment...reception was bright, clean and the staff were pleasant. Corridors to rooms reminded me of my old school ( I think it's because I went there in the 80s). Room was clean and had everything I needed. The restaurant was a big let down.....very dark and I had to walk through another room with stacks of chairs and tables, evening meal was okay but I've paid a lot less for a lot better food in the past. Breakfast is something to miss....sticky tables, staff who are half asleep and the hot buffet wasn't....it was a buffet but it wasn't hot. I'll be choosing somewhere else the next time I stay in the area.

I am sorry that you felt you were let down by the Restaurant. There is access to the Bar and Restaurant is through a designated walkway of which you were not advised of. We also have a new Head Chef in the Hotel and are launching a new Restaurant Menu this evening.

With regards to the Breakfast team, some customer service training has recently taken place with the team in order to ensure consistency of service at Breakfast and Dinner.

I do hope that you will decide to return to the Hotel in the near future.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor about your recent stay here at Sporting Lodge, Middlesbrough.

I am sorry to read of your disappointment with the Wifi and Mobile phone access, we did experience some wifi issues previously, but a new router has now been fitted, which appears to have resolved the issue. With regards to having no service on your mobile phone, this will be dependant on your service provider and the hotspot areas, of which are beyond the Hotels' control.

We are in the process of updating the bedrooms, which include new Windows, Carpets, Chairs and Curtains, however I am sure that you can understand this is a time consuming initiative.

A new Menu is being launched in the Restaurant today, of which customer service re-training has been undertaken with the Restaurant team.

I hope that you will visit the Hotel again in the near future.

I stayed again on business and it was a much better experience than last time. This time I had a room on the first floor, which was comfy, clean and in a better state than the last room I stayed in at this hotel. It was also quitter on that floor as people weren't always passing by to have a ciggy outside.

The check in was much quicker and easier than last time as well. The staff seemed a little more sure of what they were doing this time as well.

The restaurant was the let down this time. The staff just aren't up to scratch in there. The girl who served me and my colleague on both nights appeared to have lost the ability to smile. At one point we ordered our drinks, then five minutes later gave our food order and our starter, (which took 15 mins to come out) was out before we got our drinks!! The food is of an ok standard and is passable for a business trip (in fact the Yorkshire puddings were excellent!!) it is not 4 star quality that this hotel claims to be.

People have said the gym and pool are good, this I wouldn't know but there aren't many hotels that can boast a gym as busy as this one seemed to be. So some improvement has been made, but a revamp, redecorate and a re-launch may well benefit this mediocre hotel.

It's saving grace is it's breakfast, good choice, hot food and a nice selection of continental stuff as well. Only really spoilt on our last morning when one of my colleagues was told she couldn't have any breakfast and another colleague had a buttery knife dropped on her by a waitress, which stained her work uniform.

Room Tip: Try and get a first floor room.
