“Great location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2010

We stayed in the main hotel building. The staff are really friendly and the location is simply ideal for either a Norwich city break or visiting student offspring at UEA. Free parking, quiet location with its own gardens.

Good value, presentable rooms, breakfast not as good as it was but still a place that we enjoy using.

Great location for Norwich town centre and the cathedral. Very comfortable bed and basic bathroom. The breakfast for £9.50 was really good with buffet for cereals, fruit and croissants and a cooked breakfast which was very tasty. The staff there were very welcoming and helpful and I would definitely recommend it if you are staying in Norwich.

Like many of the recent contributors we found our stay to be disappointing. The price was reasonable for a city centre room £59 for room only (breakfast extra). I think this was one of their basic rooms. The hotel is split into three buildings and this one was looking a little shabby - slightly threadbare stair carpet and battered paintwork. Our radiator did not work, which we reported and they said they would come over to check the boiler, which they did and rang to say it should be OK soon. We then went out for the evening but when we came back we still had no heating - not even any heat in the pipes leading to the radiator. As it was now late and all we wanted to do was go to sleep we decided to put up with it. When we mentioned it in the morning the reception staff were a little annoyed we hadn't reported it again.

Furniture in the room was fine but dated - reminded me of MFI in the 80s but everything was spotlessly clean. My side of the bed was comfortable but every time my husband turned over a spring rattled. The bathroom was clean but again has seen better days - first signs of mould on the bath sealant and the shower pressure was terrible with the water suddenly going cold several times during a shower.

The location is great but money needs to be invested. I realise this would probably mean prices rising but if something's not done soon they will not get repeat business.

Firstly we arrived at about midnight with a lot of bags, the night porter just watched my husband and i struggle up the stairs - we even dropped a couple of items which he just stood there looking at.
Once in the room we drew the blinds and curtains only to find one of our windows didn't have a curtain - this might be ok in the middle of the countryside where there are no street lights but in the centre of Norwich it just meant that our room was lit up everytime a car went past. The room itself must have been over some kind over generator as there was a terrible buzzing all night.
The worst thing was the bathroom - the shower curtain was just a piece of fabric meaning that when the shower was on the water just went all over the floor - there was no mat etc and the floor was very slippy lino. The water pressure was so bad you had to lift the shower head down and place directly onto your head if you wanted any way of washing the shampoo out.
Not impressed for the money we paid - you'd be far better off in a Travelodge.
We have attempted to contact the manager 3 times since but he had declined to respond to us.

Arrived on a thusday and was greeted by a very nice receptionist/batman who was both very helpful and gave us a very warm welcome. The hotel is set in a number of different buildings surrounding a beautiful plantation gardens which is free to guests. We stayed in the building which housed the reception which is on the junction of earlham road/chester place. We were given room 5 which is on 1st floor and on the main road. The room itself was clean and pleasant and a reasonable size. The bed was very hard but the sheets etc were very clean and crisp. The room only had one bedside cabinet which was a little unusual for a AA inspected hotel. The room was also a bit of suntrap and was very hot during the evening with no fan available in the room. You could only open one of the windows, however the noise from the traffic together with the kitchen below the window made it very difficult to get a good nights sleep. The bathroom was a complete disaster. It was without doubt one of the smallest, smelliest, shabby & very beige bathrooms I have seen. The basin tap was broken, the shower was in need of some attention with most of the water being lost between the hose and the head. The wall mounted temp controller also fell off. We paid £70 per night without breakfast. To sum up, good value for a city location, avoid room 5, ask to see a room before you commit, excellent staff. This hotel has the potential to be excellent, it just needs somebody to stay in a holiday inn or the like to see what you can get for your money and make some sensible, quality improvements.

We stayed at The Beeches for one night and found it to be excellent value for money. It is set in beautiful grounds and is just a short walk away from the town. The room was clean and tastefully decorated. The bed is the most comfortable I has slept in, plenty of pillows, lovely crisp clean comfortable sheets and a really good mattress, we had the best nights sleep!
There was a tv and dvd player in our room and plenty of complimentary beverages along with a kettle and some biscuits.
On the down side the shower was rubbish. It sprayed all over the place and it was really hard to get a decent temperature, shame because it looked fairly expensive but was not at all enjoyable!
Steve on reception and serving breakfast was friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and included in our room price. There is plenty of parking on site.
Yes, some parts of the place look a bit shabby but the important bits were all up to scratch.
A good hotel in a lovely city.

We walked by this hotel when we visited the adjacent "Plantation Garden", on a previous brief visit to Norwich. So we tried it out when we came up for a Wine Dinner at Roger Hickman restaurant (see separate review).
The location is brilliant, just a quick stroll over the footbridge into Upper Giles Street - and they have ample parking. The Hotel is a collection of 3 characterful buildings that surround the interesting (& separate) Plantation Garden. The guy in reception was very friendly and helpful - and obviously enjoys his work. On chatting to him on checkout he was so proud of their apartments that he took us over to show them to us!
We paid £49 for a double room (no breakfast) in the "Governor's Lodge" building. Our 1st floor room was pretty large, and had two comfortable armchairs, excellent bed and coffee/tea facilities. The overall effect was a slightly distressed but elegant style. For example the sash windows did need some attention, and one of the sink taps was loose - but the bath fittings were fine quality albeit rather elderly. The room was very clean, and had a good sized television, with digital (Freeview) channels, including Radio 4 etc. The complimentary wi-fi (unsecured) connection worked fine. So if you are not happy with seeing flaking paint on the outside window cills, brown furniture etc. then this is not the place for you!
There was some pre-booking confusion over breakfast, I thought the chap said that it was available only at their sister venture, Cafe 91. In fact they do do it in-house for £9.50 per head, in a pleasant looking restaurant. On a summer morning it would be very pleasant to have this on the patio area. We had decided to go to Cafe 91 anyway, having looked at their flexible breakfast options. There was a hitch, in that they advertised as being open from 08.30 (Saturday), but in fact don't open until 09.30. Whoops! However the adjacent Metfield Bakery (same people as at Snape Maltings), was open and we had an excellent light breakfast there, whilst reading the provided newspapers.
Overall this hotel worked brilliantly for us, and we will be returning later this year and use it as a base for a bit of Norwich exploration plus good eating. From reading some of the other the reviews, it may be that some of the other rooms are not quite as nice as ours, but perhaps reflects tolerance levels for less than immaculate states of decor. In value terms our visit warranted 5 stars, I gave 4 to set expectations for anyone that expected 1st class country house hotel standards, ideal location and parking - in a city centre for £49!!
