What a wonderful town and a fantastic place to stay. Thoroughly enjoyed, one night was not enough. Could not have been made to feel more at home. Room was great as was entire hotel
Staff could not have been more helpful and courteous. So refreshing to see the real England, yet a vibrant city
Thank you

My wife and I stayed here back in mid-December for a pre-Christmas treat.

I hadn't been to or stayed in Norwich before, so as is vital these days I did some research. What I wanted was secure parking, central location, dinner, bed and breakfast and an interesting building in the old city centre. What I got was exactly that.

We arrived at about 1.30 and were able to check in and dump our luggage before exploring. I had booked the Filby Suite (Room 6) which is up in the eaves of the roof and opposite the cathedral. This is the older part of the building, and if you want the character of the place then this is where to be. Be warned that it is a bit of a hike from reception and involves a short climb up a steel spiral staircase; no problem with a light overnight bag but not if you like to bring the kitchen sink.

Traffic noise can be a bit intrusive as the hotel is right on the street, but as I tend to sleep with ear plugs due to many business trips and noisy hotels this wasn't an issue. If you are a bit of an old building geek (like me) then there is some interesting exploration of the roof frame to be had, but if you aren't into that kind of thing it just looks like an old wooden roof with a bit of a lean on it.

As I mentioned, location is everything and this place fitted us superbly. You are 1 minute away from Elm Hill which is the classic old image of Norwich, and which in turn leads to the city centre. Walking is the way to really see the city, and we did a lot of that; booking a modern hotel further out was never an option.

Once back from your excursions you will obviously want feeding and watering. The restaurant area looks to be a previously open yard type of place, with the bar appearing to once have been a separate building in its own right. It was a very pleasant space well set out and we had an excellent meal professionally waited upon by a young lad who I regret to say I forgot his name. Breakfast is served in the same place, but it is a buffet set up where you help yourself. This seems to have ruffled the feathers of some reviewers but I had no issues with either the process, the food or the staff.

When you leave you need to ask for the car park exit bar code thingummy or else you face the walk of shame back to reception to get one.

We had a very pleasant stay; I'm sure you will too.

Room Tip: If you opt for the old part of the building, be aware that it overlooks the street and there is some...

Stayed for New Year's Eve 2013 and had a brilliant time. Food was excellent (all six courses) especially as they were catering for large numbers. Beef medallions were to die for. Staff very attentive, polite and helpful. Band (Captain Scarlet) fantastic plus very good disco. Casino tables were great fun too. Room was large as was the bathroom, bed very comfortable. Would have booked for 2014 event there and then if possible. The whole place looked wonderful with lights and Christmas trees everywhere. Would highly recommend. All this for £99 each with late check out till 2pm and breakfast/brunch served until 12 noon. Well done to everyone. Thank you from Sue and Jeremy, Kings Lynn.

Just returned from a New Year's Eve dinner and entertainment. From when we checked in, to when we checked out , the staff could not do enough for you, very pleasant and helpful. The six course meal was very good, a credit to the kitchen, as was the breakfast, although keeping some of the food hot, due to many people having a later breakfast than us,may be a bit of a problem. Rooms were very clean, and adequate, without being anything special , but without a doubt would make another visit.

The wedding of our daughter on 30th November 2013 was carefully planned by Amy, with regular planning meetings, although these became a little repetitive.
The day ran smoothly and to plan - everyone was helpful and pleasant - especially Dan who acted as Master of Ceremonies. The food was excellent and it was nice to be able to offer our guests a menu choice.
Our only problem arose when a wedding guest injured themselves (through no fault of the hotel)and an over zealous bouncer employed for the night insisted he was a first aider but clearly didn't have a clue as he was looking throught a first aid book and refused assistance from guests with medical training. The situation was not life threatening so we were able to monitor the events from a distance. Luckily his advise was ignored and the injured party was taken to hospital where he had a small operation.
Overall we felt well looked after and had a marvellous day which will be fondly remembered.

Room Tip: rooms towards the back of the hotel may be quieter on a weekend

We have stayed at this hotel three times before because we love the atmosphere and proximity to the shops. The hotel is lovely and clean and the food is good. The staff are welcoming. We had a small room in the new block, we have stayed in the older rooms which we prefer as they are larger.
