“Avoid!”
Review of King Street

Reviewed 28 April 2014

Hate going down this street, I lived in or which for 20 years and it was always somewhere to avoid. It's dirty with a horrible feel to it, most buildings are empty and boarded up

I can see by the previous review that the person has not been to king street for a very long time as they say best to drive straight through - well you can't drive through king street any more you haven't been able to do so for many years. King Street has been developed and is now mixed housing and is a much sought after dwelling area. There is access to a bridge across the river wensum to riverside which has cinema, many restaurants, pubs & bowling. The Ferryboat pub has been closed for many years also.

King Street in Norwich has an outstanding medieval hall, The Dragon Hall, well worth a visit.
If you want prostitutes and drugs, this is the place to be. I drive through, never stop.
Locals campaign to clean the place up but not a lot of success.
It used to be a centre for local breweries, but no more.
For religious people, you will find in Music House Lane off King Street, the small bulding where Mother Julian of Norwich, an Anchorite nun, lived as a hermit for many years. Sorry, can't give you dates, but is on the web under Mother Julian Anchorite, or sometimes Sister Julian. Nothing to see though.
There used to be a lovely club for the youth and for boxers, the Norwich Lads Club.
Also at the Carrow Road end is the Ferry Boat Inn, where the notorious landlord Steve Wright, the Ipswich killer of at least 5 prostitutes a few years ago, used to serve pints with a smile.
A large room for functions at the back, where years ago a local lady known as Fag Ash Lil used to play the piano with great skill.
I don't know what it is like now, years since I went there. Check it out on Norwich web site first to see if it is still open. A very old pub, in Summer we used to be able to sit outside at the rear to watch the river activity and listen to Norwich City supporters just over the river at Carrow Road.
Don't walk down King Street alone at night unless you want to be pestered. Kerb crawlers are targetted by local police regularly as they do their best to clear the place up.
