Owner description: The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is an inspirational public art museum where you can see outstanding art for free. The Centre, which opened in 1978 to house the Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Collection, is a world-class building designed by Norman Foster, at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.

Sir Robert Sainsbury called the Sainsbury Centre the most beautiful piece in his collection. It still is. Built in the 1970s, Norman Foster's design is one of Norfolk's architectural treasures. The permanent collection is endlessly fascinating and temporary exhibitions are always interesting and well presented. The scones in the cafe are pretty good, too.

Hadn't been here before and wasn't sure whether the main display is a permanant exhibition, or whether it was themed and a selection of the objects they hold. Nearly all the exhibits were related to the human form - paintings (lots of Francis Bacon), carvings (pre-Columbian, Benin, native American). An interesting selection, complemented by 4 smaller exhibitions (I only saw 3 of these) and all free. Fantastic cafe, with short menu of inexpensive food.

I was not keen on going as art and history are certainly not my thing, however once there it was very eye opening. There is so much to d and so much to look at, it was very different and a good choice of activitie for a rainy day! I enjoyed it very much so and would visit again... as it does get you thinking more not so much on the what it is but how different art can be and the perception different people have on the same things.
