“Nice coffee but .... they've never heard of skimmed milk”
Reviewed 10 October 2012

We visited the Assembly Rooms after an absence of several years. We had coffees/tea and cakes in one of the lounges which I guess had previously been an exhibition room. The offering has clearly been moved up market from the plastic macs and rain hat brigade who used to haunt the old facility whilst waiting for their buses. All was very pleasant and comfortable, which justified the higher prices than those charged at the average outlet.

My one gripe is one I keep coming across at so many of these places. This exchange is typical: “Can I have a skinny latte, please?” “No sorry sir, we don’t do skimmed milk ….”
Surely in this day and age, it can’t be that difficult to provide? It’s no good giving that “no demand for it” excuse. In the City where I work, I reckon 50% of those queuing up for their morning coffee request skimmed milk. Perhaps it’s time that the provinces responded.

OK rant over. I’ve booked for lunch here in couple of days. Will report back.

“Excellent Afternoon Tea”
Reviewed 25 September 2012

Just had an excellent Afternoon Tea at the Assembly House. Such a beautiful, elegant setting. Very attentive staff. Real loose tea as well not teabags! Beautifully made sandwiches, cakes and scones. Feeling thoroughly spoilt.

“Little bit of splendour”
Reviewed 17 September 2012 via mobile

My daughter and I had afternoon high tea. Was lovely to be served with politeness and attention to our needs.
We were offered extra sandwiches, cakes and coffee at no extra charge. We never felt rushed and stayed chatting for
A couple of hours. Lovely old building and surroundings. Will def be returning again soon

“free meal on joining”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

joined online and received a free meal when paying for 1 other. this made it good value but wouldnt want to pay the full price. the restaurant is really nice but i like white tablecloths. the service was excellent and it was traditional. i would pay 2/3ds the price as the starter and main were good but sweet was a little disappointing. atmosphere nice.
