“excellent hotel with friendly staff”
Reviewed 6 July 2010

A nice hotel with pleasant friendly staff who made the stay a rewarding experience.
Clean room with good air conditioning and comfortable bed.
Good bar and restaurant providing good food and staffed with very helpful and courteous personel.
Altogether a very pleasant but short stay.

Second stay on business at this hotel. It was comfortable, clean but a little dated. having said that the staff were very good from reception to catering. The room was comfortable and air conditioned, the bathroom was clean and tidy with a bath and shower but was very cramped [like putting an elephant in a matchbox]. The hotel has a health Spa which visitors are allowed to use. I did not use the multi-gym that was far to energetic but I did make use of the indoor pool, sauna and jacuzi, really enjoyable. The food in the restaurant was good if not a bit pricey for what was offered [fortunately I was not paying, it was on expenses] but I do like to check prices out for leisure visits. Breakfast was very good with a good selection from fruit and cereal to cooked breakfast. All in all a comfortable stay. One final point do not pay the tip that the hotel add to your restaurant bill when you request your bill, this goes straight to the profits of the hotel and not to the staff that served you, request they remove it and give a cash tip to the staff that looked after you that way it does get to the people you may want to reward.

What amazes me about a poor chain hotel is that there are presumably several tiers of management who are aware that the place is well below standard and are happy to live with that. Probably this place makes a good profit but if that IS the case it certainly doesn't deserve to.

Unbelievably this was my 3rd or 4th stay here over the past 2 years but this time it will definitely be may last. I don't normally review the hotels I use for business because they are all pretty much of the same standard. HI Norwich falls well below that.

The rooms are small and charmless if basically functional but the restaurant is something else. The girl acting as maitre d' was like something from a sitcom: she made us wait while she discussed at length with a colleague and was then abrupt to the point of rudeness. The "special" cottage pie was among the worst food I have ever been served at any catering establishment anywhere in the world: dried up mince and tomato goo topped with what looked like smashed up hash browns (left over from breakfast?) and melted cheese served in a dish with a side of chips and mixed veg for, wait for it, £12! My colleague had a fish pie from the same stable I think. Our complaint was responded to by the offer of a customer comment card to fill out.

Breakfast for £10 was almost as bad. I see another reviewer highlights this as excellent. On the day we were there the coffee was little more than lukewarm brown water, the waiter suffered from a severe personal hygiene problem (something you might think any worthwhile manager would deal with) and the cooked breakfast was, characteristically these days for a buffet, luke warm and apparently of some age by the time we ate it.

Just dire - there has to be better in Norwich and if all Holiday Inns were like this they'd go bust.

The hotel was going through some renovations during my stay which meant the bar was not in use. The staff were as friendly and helpful as usual, they explained the alterations being made and I was given a complientry drink for the inconvience.

I stayed 1 night 5th June 2010.
Check in was friendly and efficient. I had paid less than half of what someone was offered on the phone while I was checking in, and was surprised to discover that my rate included breakfast, normally £9.95 (and worth it). The room was OK although the tv wasn't a flat screen and channel five didn't work. Nor, surprisingly, was there an in room safe. The bathroom was small and functional, though as always, there wasn't really enough room for two people to put their stuff. It had a heated towel rail. I can't comment on the shower, as I had a swim before breakfast and consequently, showered there. I slept really well. Newspapers were available in the lobby. A gin and tonic was £5.25, not bad for hotel prices. A standard Holiday Inn, and none the worse for that!

Arrived at the hotel to find a very noisy party going on with lots of guest and only 4 members of staff to cover reception, bar and restaurant surely their staffing levels should be looked at ! Our bathroom had not been cleaned loads of hair in the plug hole and soap rings around the bath. We were offered a room move but would clearly have to wait as I has told they were understaffed unless of course I would like to make the beds up myself! Room service extremely slow. Phone the hotel on check out about lost property and still 9 days later I am waiting for their promised call back. All in all very disappointing stay.
