“Don't stay there !”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

My daughter got married there and the wedding was lovely, everything went well. But don't stay in one of their bedrooms overnight. The standard of these bedrooms is average, not as described by their website, the mattresses have seen better days and were extremely uncomfortable as was the pillows, we had a bedside lamp that didn't work, the toilet seat was broken, which could have been dangerous for someone elderly, my husband actually ended up repairing it. We were very disappointed. Wouldn't stay there again. Jan C

Booked a twin for one night last weekend. We arrived at 3.10pm but was told that we could not go to our room as there had been a burst pipe in the corridor leading to our room. These things happen and I wasn't unhappy about the situation. I asked where we should go to get some food - meaning, where is your restaurant - we were told to go back onto the road, turn right and there is a lovely place to eat!! She was right, the food was fantastic!! After filling ourselves silly we headed back to the hotel. We were allowed to go to the room but there were no lights on in the corridor - not a problem I thought - the corridor was as dark as a country lane in a winters evening - I tripped over the wet towels!!! Finally got to the room, Room 37, where we found bed bugs!! I took one back to reception, where I was told they had never had them before. I wondered if the manager, Richard, thought I had taken it with me!!! I asked for my money back and will never return. I was offered an apology, but I didn't hang around to hear the rest! I was out of that place!!!

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

We were guests at a wedding and the groom booked our room at what he thought was a discounted price of £90 including breakfast. As the wedding was at 3pm we asked what time our room would be ready and were told 3pm! To be able to use the room to get ready we had to pay an extra £20 therefore making a total price of £110. We looked on the Internet at the prices of rooms and guess what they were £59! When we booked in we asked about this and were told yes this was an Internet price and if we had booked this way we could have paid the lower price. So if you are coming to the Oaklands as wedding guests book via the Internet and not the discounted wedding price. Room was ok and was clean. Food was excellent and waitresses very good especially at breakfast. I would recommend hotel for a wedding but book your room online.

We stayed at the Oaklands hotel for 1 night, on a Friday as we were visiting family in Norwich. As we arrived we were greeted by a friendly receptionist who was very helpful and proficient at her job. As a family we decided to stay in the hotel for an evening meal, then we could venture out in to the city for the evening. We went to the restaurant and were greeted by a lovely young man who we later found out was the restaurant supervisor. The drinks order was taken and was very quick to arrive to the table. The food was superb, we had a mixture of the carvery and grill menu. Fast service and very friendly staff. Overall very good stay.

The Oaklands is a nice hotel with very nice staff and a great location with a stop for Bus number 14 across the street, which will take you to town center. The staff was most accommodating in regard to our needs and even arranged for us to have a private room for a dinner party birthday celebration.

The food was delicious, with a good variety to choose from, even though we were with a small tour group and were given a selected menu to choose from as part of our travel package.

The only real problems were the fact that there was a Carvery set up with very hot lights so the dining room was very warm. The other issue had to deal with the wedding parties they had every night, with loud music until midnight each night. Several members of our party were disturbed either by the loud music or the “celebrants” being rowdy in the parking lot after the parties’ conclusion.

We stayed here on Saturday night as we were attending a wedding locally and the hotel was conveniently located. The hotel is in my opinion extremely over priced at £100+ a night. Rooms and public spaces seem tired and poorly maintained. The fire-doors are noisy at night and we found the breakfast less than appetising. The staff are pleasant enough but seem to have little managerial supervision. Best avoided unless you really have no other option.

Room Tip: (Renovated) Rooms in the new wing looks like they might be better.
