“Cheap and cheerful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

We visited with friends for a carvery meal as it is a favourite place of theirs and we've been several times before with them. The carvery was okay, though again the Yorkshire puddings were too hard to cut into! Not many choices of pudding but at the price of £10 for 2 meals it was a cheap and cheerful menu.

When we got to the coffee stage, I was able to order decaffeinated coffee but one of our friends asked for latte... only to be told the machine was broken! I think without fail every time we have been to the Oaklands, there is an excuse about the coffee machine being broken.....surely there is a firm in Norwich somewhere who could fix it?

Interestingly there were hardly any other people dining in the restaurant on Satuirday evening although the place was busy with (possibly 2) weddings.

So I know you get what you pay for but still I couldn't believe how bad a service we received!! We had a party if 7 having a carvery the resturant was empty so no excuse that they were busy I saw double the amount of staff than customer but no one thought to come to our table, we went to get good no one to cut meat.... Wanted to order dessert no one came.... Plates left on tAble no one came...not even the usual how's the meal? Then asking for a latte to be told the coffee machine doesn't work shameful service all round would hate to think how bad it would be if actually busy.

The wedding - we attended our friends wedding at the oaklands. The wedding breakfast was tasty with good portions as was the evening buffet. The rooms were decorated to match the theme.

The accommodation - we stayed in a lodge. When we first got there we were greeted with your rooms not ready despite paying to check in at 12 (it was now 1.30). We then had issues with the key not working for the lodge. Not one member of staff smiled at us or wished us a nice stay. The lodge was don't good value. There was dust and stains on bedding, curtains and tables. The shower would not work and the spa bath was incredibly noisy. They advertise the availability of an outdoor pool however this is not used for Health and safety. The breakfast was basic. Again a smile would have been nice.

The Oaklands Hotel is well overdue for a makeover. The first room I was allocated was dirty and in need of a good clean. My subsequent room was just ok. The breakfast and carvery were good but again the restaurant could do with a good clean and or a makeover. The staff were very helpful in resolving my many problems- but the problems should not have occurred in the first place!!

Room Tip: The hotel has lots of functions which finish at midnight . Ask for a room away from the noisse

We stayed at the Oakland for a wedding and felt it was overpriced and in desperate need of updating. The rooms were 'tired' with chipped paintwork, matted carpets and cheap bedding. The room was also quite stuffy even with the windows open and the fan which was provided was incredibly noisy and well past it's sell by date.
Our wedding was at 1 o'clock and check in was 3 o'clock . To rub salt into the wound we were charged an extra £20 to get into our room at 12.00.
The only saving grace was the breakfast which, to be fair, was well presented and varied, catering for all tastes.
Overall the experience was disappointing particularly as we had good feedback from other wedding guests who stayed at a nearby hotel at just over half the price that we paid.

Staff very friendly and efficient. Always a smile. Nice hotel and lovely breakfast with plenty of choices. Good wifi signal. The area around the hotel front entrance needs a tidy. Didn't look too welcoming because beer barrels etc were stored there. No lift but once you get your suitcase up the stairs it's not a problem til you have to get it down again. Room was hot but hey! August British weather. Bed comfy and clean. Bathroom horrid with peeling paintwork, grubby grout and cracked plaster. Clean towels. Hairdryer with frayed wire. Lots of noise in evening (you are pre-warned) and can be crowded in the bar due to the hotel being a very popular venue for weddings. One evening there were 2 receptions! One at each end of the hotel but guests congregated in the bar area. On the other hand there were times when the bar was very easy and relaxing. The grounds are gorgeous, even on a rainy day. If you have young 'uns plenty of running around space. There is a very nice pool but it looks like it's not been used for quite some time, pity because the weather was lovely and there were a few children staying in the hotel. We really enjoyed our stay but the bathroom in our room needs a lot of tlc.

We stayed on Sunday night on one of their deals. Food excellent, wine lovely, staff friendly, clean comfortable room, beautiful garden.

Will definitely stay again, infact have already booked it.

Within walking distance of other pubs/restaurant along the river front.

Thank you for a lovely stay
