“Bad service, great location”
Reviewed 8 August 2010

The hotel is beautiful, and centrally located, however the receptionist let's it down, rude and abrupt. Our welcome was hostile, and our room had towels for one person not two, broken shower head and the main room lights didn't work. Beautiful decor but needs some general tlc and staff training. We booked very last minute and would reccomend this hotel fir the rate we paid of £80 however its standard rate would be very poor value.

Was told that this was the best hotel in Norwich. That does not say very much for the others if this is meant to be the best. Toilet was not clean, and after cleaning it myself (great after having driven 350 miles), not been cleaned for a number of days. The wall surrounding the toilet was dirty also. Carpet not clean either.
The hotel tries to be something special, but fails. Poor fittings and not maintaned, tiles loose on the floor for example. The lady on the desk at checkout did not seem particularly bothered...."will mention it to housekeeping, sorry about that"
Try and find somewhere else if you can.....there is a YMCA opposite, try that!

A great improvement on two previous stays, under former management who bothered with such gimmicks as self-lowering lavatory seats but didn't bother to put numbers on the rooms. This time around: friendly, informative staff; even better rooms; improved breakfast quality and service. One criticism (my partner informs me): no separate vanity mirror in bathroom (one has to lean over an awkward sink). And on the Saturday night we were there we waited TWENTY MINUTES in the bar being ignored my harrassed barmen trying to cope with cocktail orders from wedding guests. They didn't apologise and say they were rushed off their feet but would get to us in a minute...I got the impression they didn't even know we were there...Oh yes...and the "spa" didn't seem to be in operation.

It was a pleasure to stay in this independent hotel which was furnished and managed in a style of its own rather than aping a chain hotel. The staff were all extremely helpful and pleasant. The room was well furnished and although it was not air conditioned, a large (if slightly noisy) floor fan was provided. The bathroom was stunning if somewhat "bling". We eat in the hotel on a Monday night (often not the best night of the week) and had a superb meal. The standard of cooking was imaginative and precise - my carpaccio of beef followed by lamb with mint gnochic and asparagus veloute was far better than average. The wine list was extensive and not expensive and there was a good selection of bottled real beers. Free secure parking was a bonus. Our only complaint was the choice of rather intrusive jazz being played in the bar and dining room. Although I can understand that jazz (or at least pre war jazz) would fit with the art deco ambience, modern jazz is an acquired taste which we (a middle aged couple) do not share. It would have been preferable to have had less intrusive ambient music.

We stayed at St Giles House for our wedding anniversary having stayed there on our wedding night last year and had a lovely stay, however it seems to have let the standards slip. Apparently the receptionist was busy so shoved us to our room without so much as addressing us by name or telling us what time breakfast was being served and she didn't even open the door for us. Room 17 was well appointed and the bathroom spectacular but as soon as we got back from our evening out the problems started. We walked back into the room to be greeted by a smell of drains which wouldn't go all night, the night of which we saw most hours due to the racket created by everybody else in the hotel flushing the toilet. I could understand a certain amount of noise from an old building but the plumbing creaked and groaned so much it was enough to wake us up throughout the night. As a result of which neither of us had a good nights sleep which for £150 a night should be expected. Breakfast was tasty but the staff were abrupt and clearly wanting us to go all the wsy through. We would have mentioned any of our issues to the staff but we were not even asked how our stay was or thanked for our custom on checking out.
How much difference a year makes, we will not be going back for our second anniversary.

No problems at all with staff; reception could not have been more helpful or pleasant. With a friend and they organized a guest bed so we didn't have to share the double bed. great check in/out. Lovely large room with art deco furniture, robes, well stocked reasonable mini bar etc. Cooked breakfast was a bit slow first morning but worth the wait. The location could not be better and the free parking was a bonus. The only downsides were that the bathroom radiator did not seem to adjust and it was too hot to stay in there, and that there were only wooden blinds at the window which let in full morning light. I was awake at 5.30am and struggled to sleep in broad daylight. For the £80 late rooms deal it was excellent value, but if I had paid £130 I would have expected curtains!

In contrast to some recent reviews, we found the staff to be most helpful and friendly. They kept the folder we accidently left at reception, and several people came to tell us that I had left one of the car doors open in the car park.
The room was very good, It had been re-done as a wet room with a big shower, but no bath, so be sure to ask for what you want when booking. The air conditioning fan could be heard all night, but this seems to happen everywhere.
When we go back to Norwich for a wekend, this is where we will stay.
