Owner description: The Settle-Carlisle Railway is one of the world's great rail journeys. It carves its way through the magnificent landscape of the Yorkshire Dales and then descends to Cumbria's lush green Eden Valley with its views of the Pennines and Lakeland Fells. A seven day a week service of modern diesel sprinter units gives travellers plenty of choice of when to travel, and the opportunity to board and leave the train at many of the beautifully preserved stations along the route. Customers can also expect a refreshment trolley service on many of the trains.

“Relaxing and beautiful views”

Got a midweek trip and was amazed how popular both journeys were. Return cost was only £16. Viaduct would probably be best seen as a walker but lovely Scenery throughout.

“Fantastic day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 April 2014

This was one of the attractions that was on our to do list from the moment we arrived in Cumbria, and suffice to say we were not disappointed. We started our journey in Appleby having looked around the town, paid £2 for all day parking and then a very reasonable ~£31 for two return tickets with young person's railcards and went up to Carlisle and then right down to Settle. We stopped in Kirkby Stephen and walked down to the town, had a quick look around and walked back up again to catch the next train. This took slightly under 2 hours and the views on the way down were stunning. Once we hopped back on the train we travelled down to Settle, which gave the best views of the whole journey. You travel through a wilderness of hills and rivers, it truly is beautiful and has to be experienced. Once we were in Settle we were easily able to pass the next 3 hours before catching a train back to Appleby. It's worth checking the timetable for trains in advance, and reading the website to see where you might like to stop, but this trip is well worth doing. Just be aware you can't stop in too many places due to a limited number of trains and a fair amount of walking required at some stops!!!

“The best journey”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2014

I actually use this line regularly for travel to work, friends and family. I never get bored of looking out the windows. The views are the best for any train journey I have been on. I would recommended it to everyone for just a short or the full length journey. There are plenty of towns and villages to visit along the way. The train staff have always been very kind and funny. They make a great journey that bit better. When the weather is bad you can't see as far as you would hope but it is worth the trip anyway. If you can jump on the train on a sunny day you will get some stunning scenery.

“Wonderful journey across the fells and viaducts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2014

Our first trip on this iconic railway. We were blessed with wonderful blue skies and sunshine, so had great views all the way. We were on the ordinary train service, not a steam train, but it was a very pleasant small train, and slow enough to take in the views-it's worth buying the useful route map produced by the Friends of the railway, and on sale at the bookshop in Settle station. Even if you're not a railway buff this is a great trip, and not expensive, especially if you have a railcard. You can't really see the viaducts from the train- we had driven along part of the route the day before, and seen the beautiful 24-arch Ribblesdale viaduct from the road.
