“Evening meal for 10 walkers after a wet day in The Dales”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 March 2014

Despite only booking for 8 and turning up over an hour early, we were made very welcome at The Lion.

The second we walked through the door and were greeted by a roaring log fire, and a pile of clean, dry towels for the dog (who we had left in the car, just in case!) we knew that this pub welcomed walkers and outdoor folk.

The food was excellent and the service second to none. Portion size was good, with everyone agreeing that this was one of our better choices. The "Tuesday Club" members meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month for a walk and a meal, always scoring the meal out of 10. Today's score of 9.5 was the highest every awarded by the club members.

We met family for a birthday lunch at the Lion at Settle. The restaurant is pleasantly decorated with plenty of seating without diners being on top of each other. There is a good menu and a specials board. The food was very nice, it being a Sunday most of us had beef or lamb but there were nice vegetarian options as well. The puddings were delicious, when we eventually got them. We had to wait some time before our orders were taken but as it was lunchtime and there were a number of diners in, we didn't mind too much. However, we had all finished and had to wait at least twenty minutes for our plates to be taken away and then we waited probably half an hour to be given dessert menus. In the end, we gave up and got them ourselves from across the restaurant. Our waiter did turn up a few minutes later with menus but saw we already had them. It was rather annoying as there were members of staff (not our waiter) standing around in the bar area, and by this point we were one of only two groups in the restaurant. The food here is nice and if you don't mind waiting, it should be fine.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments about your recent visit, I am pleased you found the food was lovely, but disappointed at the same time about the service. All I can do is apologise about the wait you had for your order to be taken and plates to be cleared. We are all about quick and effective service so this is disappointing to read. I hope you will give us another chance to show you what great service we can deliver and we hope to see you in the near future. Thank you again, Hayley Mace and all the team at The Lion

Food was disappointing, having been recommended by friends. Steak and ale pudding was bland - lacked flavour. Liver was of the crumbly textured variety and slightly overcooked. Having to pay extra for vegetables to accompany the liver seemed a bit of a rip off, especially when we just got carrots and undercooked sprouting broccoli. Apple crumble dessert was good, thankfully.

A few friends went along to the Lion for an evening meal Food average, wine by the glass rather expensive £6.10! Just felt towards the end of the evening we were rushed, it appeared that the waiter wanted to go home and the table had to be cleared.

Thank you for your comments. I do apologise that you felt you were being rushed towards the end of the night. I shall see the staff members who was working that night and have a word as this is not what we are about at all.
Not all of our wines are £6.10 by the glass; we have a wide range of wines which we do in 125ml, 175ml and 250ml measures.
I am disappointed to see you found the food to be just average.
We hope you decide to come back and give us another chance.

Recently stayed at the Lion hotel for the first time, though we have visited the bar previously, after a cheeky ask by myself they very kindly extended a good B&B rate, we had an evening meal which was excellent, breakfast again excellent (I'd recommend the full cooked Yorkshire), staff were very friendly. My only complaint (sorry) is that our room (room 1) was very small, ditto the bathroom, also a damp stain on the bedroom ceiling, mildew on the windowsill and in the bathroom, compared with how good the downstairs refurb is the upstairs doesnt compare. I'm glad I didnt pay the full tariff, also as it was a birthday present for my partner I was a bit dissappointed, unless the other rooms are superior I wouldnt stay overnight again.

The lion is a nice adaptation of an older building with a large bar / restaurant on the ground floor and accommodation above and over the courtyard. There is a nice atmosphere to the place we stayed in January and found it warm and welcoming. The room was a tad on the small side but had a a nice separate bathroom area with bath thankfully. We'd been out walking for the day and got sodden so a hot bath was in order. The TV was a bit hap hazard (sound) but everything else was as you can expect from a good standard B&B. The restaurant you will need to make a booking for in evening as it gets full. I had fish and chips and its rare to be able to get fresh fish inland and it was fantastic. Breakfast the following day had a good selection and was tasty. Out and about Settle is a very pleasant town with good pubs, outdoor shops and other random shops. There a range of walks around the town and bike routes and it is an excellent base for the dales if you are considering a trip. Bear in mind it doesn't have a car park so you'll have to factor in parking costs and potentially moving car around if on a longer stay.

Room Tip: One at the back of the courtyard

Thank you for your lovely comments. I am pleased you found The Lion to be 'warm and welcoming,' this is just the perfect impression we like all guests to feel when they arrive at The Lion.
Only a few of our rooms have baths so (hopefully) next time you stay, you may want to request a room with a bath.
I am pleased to see you enjoyed your fish and chips and your breakfast!
We are very lucky to be located in such a beautiful town with lots of things to do for our guests.
Thanks again for your comments; we hope to see you soon! Hayley Mace and all the team at The Lion

We've stopped for a coffee several times over the years so when we were thinking of somewhere to go for an overnight visit, the friendliness and warm welcome made us think of the Lion. The staff were very friendly. We were able to choose where we wanted to sit, so sat in front of a roaring fire on a wet and windy night. Dinner was delightful -- not many kitchens produce a steak as good as the one I had. The room was clean and comfortable. The Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries were a pleasant surprise. Breakfast was equally good, with a good choice of food. Being able to make as much or as little toast as we wanted was a very nice touch, as were the mini croissants. We'll return again.

Room Tip: Book a room at the back of the hotel as it should be quieter.
