“Don't get confused between the preserved railway and regular trains”
Reviewed 13 November 2012

Two services operate on this route:

The Northern Rail regular service is operated by relatively modern diesel units, which run four times a day from Whitby to Grosmont then on to Middlesbrough and vice-versa on Monday-Saturday. There is a limited service on Sundays in summer.

The North York Moors Railway historic service operates from Spring to about the end of October. They run three times a day from Whitby to Grosmont then Pickering/Goathland and vice-versa. They are operated by historic diesel or steam trains hauling old-fashioned carriages. These do not stop at the intermediate stations of Ruswarp and Sleights.

Return tickets are not inter-available between the two railways, as far as I know, and the tickets on the historic railway are rather more expensive, justifiably so.

Either way, the views are fantastic. On the historic NYMR trains, the seats line up with the windows, but on the Northern Trains' units, they don't always, so choose seats with care.

“A leisurely step back in time”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

A leisurely journey into "Heartbeat" country, just a pleasant, gentle little excursion. The boys love the steam engines, the countryside is lovely and you can have a drink in the Aidensfield Arms ... on ly the one, it's pretty expensive.

“Up the Esk Valley”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

Take the train up the Esk valley to Middlesbrough and then come back again through beautiful scenery. Lots of picturesque villages where the train stops. It's not a fast journey but you're there for the views so sit back and enjoy!

“Whitby to Pickering”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

Fantastic !!
We paid a few extra quid and travelled First Class. It was worth it because we had a carriage compartment all to ourselves.
Friendly staff. Amazing scenery. And a definite must-do experience when visiting the area - even for non-anorak train spotters
