“Single female traveller”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

I had the pleasure of staying three days at the Riviera this month and had a really wonderful time.
The direct booking was easy, I was immediately made to feel welcome by Zed and Emma and the exercise of 40 stairs was great for the cardio vascular region! The breakfasts were first class the "order forms" such a great idea as you get exactly what you order. The room was very comfortable and clean with a good bathroom and new walk in shower. Extra bonus a sea view!
As a single female traveller it isn't always easy but I felt perfectly at home there as soon as I was greeted at the door. Great to see baby Zak picking up experience am sure he will be able to take over breakfast service as soon as he is walking and talking. Parking permit is a great bonus too and the easy access to the delights of Whitby and the surrounding beautiful countryside. Lovely to see such a hard working couple pulling together and putting so much effort into running their business. I worked in the catering and hotel trade for years and know how demanding it is. Well done Emma and Zed keep it up and I wish you every success.

Room Tip: there are stairs but its well worth the walk when you get up there and see that view! Request sea vi...

We have been staying at the Rivera for the last four years since starting to go to the Northern Soul Weekends the first weekend in July. We love the location, our room is so nice & comfy with a great sea view, the breakfast is lovely, but the best of all is Emma, Zed & Zak ,they are excellent hosts very easy going, but very professional. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in Whitby. We have already booked for next year.

Room Tip: Room 2 is a lovely room with a four poster bed with a fab sea view.

Unfortunately my poor husband was a little unwell during our holiday (nothing to do with the hotel) and he was gutted that he'd missed a breakfast especially after I told him how cracking and perfectly cooked it was - zed and Emma were helpful and very accommodating with our toddler. We had room 5 it was ok, ( could do with a little T L C )comfortable with fantastic sea views - overall we enjoyed our stay and some previous reviews are a little harsh ( we would stay here again and recommend it to friends and family)

Lovely guest house right on the front. Spectacular views, didn't need the TV. Made very welcome by Zed. Two nice rooms, only downside was the 60 stairs!!!! Something about my age I expect! Very nice breakfast, ordered by us the day before. Met Zak at breakfast times and Anna.
Thank you. We will be back :-)

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a bit of traffic noise but not after bedtime. Superb views.

Me and my partner stayed at The Riviera guest house for a long weekend in July 2014. Upon arrival we were greeted by Zed and immediately made to feel welcome. Zed was very helpful and showed us to the room, explained how to order breakfast and left us to it. Our room was neat and tidy with stunning views of the sea. Luckily the weather was kind, which made the experience all the more pleasurable. For breakfast we chose to have the full English, which was top notch! There was also fresh pots of tea/coffee, juices, cereals, toast, jams and yogurts available. The bed was very comfortable. Walk in shower was great too! Room inlcluded plenty of furniture and storage space, window seats were a great addition as we could sit and enjoy the scenery. Only downside to the Guest house is there is no on site parking, however there is near by parking that cost us a measley £1 all weekend which was all sorted out by Zed and Emma. Our room was not very modern (room 3), but that was by choice - there are more modern rooms available if thats what you are looking for. Overall I would stay here again, and would happily recommend it to a friend.

Room Tip: Highly recommend the sea view rooms with window seats

Stayed for a long weekend in July. ive stayed here a few times before in 2013. The hosts gave us the same warm welcome as last year, the weather was beautiful and the views pretty stunning.
The owners remembered us and chatted to us like old friends. Would never stay anywhere else in whitby.

We chose the Riviera on the basis of location, price and it`s four star claim.
The location..on the sea front on West Cliff was fine and the price was reasonable but the four star rating was ambitious to say the least. The room was spacious but extremely tired and tatty although did have modern flat screen TV. There was no wardrobe in the room, just drawers, and coat hooks on the back of the door. The bathroom was adequate but had mould in the corners of the shower....another example of the housekeeping standard. The view from our rear facing room was a depressing vista of bins and parking spaces. Breakfast was ok and the owners were friendly and tried hard. Would pass as a three star seaside B&B but struggles for a four star rating.

Room Tip: Get a room at the front unless you enjoy gazing at back yards
