“Pre Christmas Break”
Reviewed 30 December 2011

We [me&wife] travelled with National Holidays to the Bay Royal Hotel, Whitby for a 2 night "All Inclusive Party" break, 19th - 21st December. On arrival at the hotel at approx 1.45pm we were told our rooms would not be ready until 15.30 but that we could leave our cases in one of the lounges and have a walk around the area until we could book in or use the bar for a hot or cold drink. Having been to Whitby a number of times before we opted to walk in to the shopping area and had an excellent toasted teacake and coffee [£6.50 for 2] in Elizabeth Botham's Confectioners and Cafeteria and can be highly recommended for snacks and lunch. The hotel is in a fantastic sea front location with panaramic views across the harbour and down the River Esk. The interior of the hotel is dated and in need of some TLC. The staff are very friendly and nothing was to much for them. The food was good and plentiful with a chioice for all courses at Dinner. The 3 hour free bar was a bit of a marathon to get drinks with queues of upto 30 people waiting to be served but having said that the service was fairly quick. The room was clean and comfortable. For the amount we paid it was very good value and we will be going again.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your stay. I couldn’t agree more that we have stunning views from the hotel. Due to the age of the building we have a continual upgrading programme on place with improvements being made all the time. Thank you for your comments on the staff, food and rooms which I will ensure are passed onto all concerned. The bar staff try their best to keep queuing to a minimum as much as possible but as I am sure you will appreciate at times through the evening it is inevitable on a free bar that queuing will occur.
I am glad you enjoyed your short stay and hope to welcome you back again in the future.

I should start with the minor negatives. Firstly the toilet in our room was dirty with pubic hair on the rim and a stained underside of the lid. This was very quickly remedied by the receptionist however. The hoover hadn't been put in all corners of the room and the room was very hot despite turning off the radiator. Had a job getting the window open because it was in a poor state with the rotted wooden frame. Generally the hotel was very clean but the grand staircase carpet could have used some dust removal. The TV in our room was very old and had a very poor signal making for a snowy picture. There were only 4 channels also but as we didn't go to watch the Telly this was a minor problem. There was no Wi Fi to be had.

All that said this hotel is a gem and it is a listed building so alterations are difficult. It could do with some TLC both inside and out though.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The staff were fantastic courteous friendly and helpful. That was across the board from the waiters, to receptionists to housekeeping. Undoubtedly they made our stay very pleasant. The meals provided were of a high quality and the dining room waiters should be proud of the service they provided. It was a very busy time for them throughout the whole period. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are visiting Whitby which in itself is a lovely little town.

Room Tip: We paid extra for a sea view but as most of the rooms face the sea I think this was an unnecessary e...

Firstly, I apologise for the problems you encountered on your arrival and am pleased to see our FOH team rectified the situation quickly. I have taken the issues raised regarding the cleanliness issues you found with our Housekeeper and these have been addressed. The TV’s are an ongoing project for replacement but we are limited with the channels due to Whitby not going digital until later this year.
All that being said, I am delighted to see none of the above ruined your stay and that you thoroughly enjoyed Christmas with us. I have a fantastic team here at the Royal and I will be sure to pass your comments onto all of the staff. It is great to see as busy as we all were over Christmas that the high standards we strive to offer were not diminished and I thank you for the recommendation. The sea view rooms are well worth that little bit extra and worth booking to avoid disappointment as approx half of the hotel does have views to the rear of the building.
We look forward to seeing you again at the Royal in the not too distant future.

Dated and in need of lots of TLC. Outside appearance and corridors are in need of updating and sprucing up. Could use more seating in public areas. However, good entertainment, lovely staff, good service, great food, plentiful portions, big rooms, quiet location, fabulous views, wonderful sea-front location and very clean. Great value for money. As a very well-seasoned traveller I do wonder what some people on here are complaining about. Then again, some people might complain at anything, given half the chance. The hotel does need updating (badly in some areas), but overall it is excellent value for money.

What a pleasure to receive your comments. The Royal is indeed an old building and we are continually updating areas of the hotel as I am sure you will have noticed during your stay. Please be assured that this is an ongoing project. It is pleasing to see that you were not disappointed with the food, staff, service and rooms – all the things we can control on a day to day basis. The team strive to hit the mark in all these areas and it is always rewarding to see it so positively commented on. I couldn’t agree more on your comments of the views, we are very lucky to enjoy some of the best views in the town.
We hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Just back from a two night break, went with National Holidays and had a great time. Rooms were nice, food was lovely with plenty of choice and staff very friendly. The only downfall was the queue's at the bar but for what we paid you can't grumble we got our money's worth. Would go again, Whitby is a quaint little place with loads of little shops.

Room Tip: A bonus would be a sea view.

Thanks for taking the time to post your positive feedback. It is pleasing to see we have ticked the boxes in so many areas – food, rooms, staff etc. I appreciate your comments with regards to queues at the bar but with a free 3 hour bar, there is always going to be some queuing, although the bar staff do their utmost to keep this moving.
We hope to welcome you back to the Royal in the near future.

Stayed at the Royal for two nights (16/17 December)Room 225. Room was a little dated but very warm and cosy.Meals were excellent with good choice, served by our friendly and efficient Hungarian waiter.
Evening entertainment was good especially Saturday with "Almost Rod (Stewart)" the best tribute act ever encountered. We saw the original in Vegas earlier this year and could hardly tell them apart vocally.
This was a pre- Christmas festive Break with National Holidays and combined with a 3 hour free bar each night it was a superb way to spend a cold winter weekend.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with an even number as they face the sea.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your great comments. It is especially pleasing to see your remarks about the food and standard of service our Restaurant/Kitchen team provide. Our evening entertainment is planned to offer something for everyone and the cabaret weekends offer something that little bit extra. We have some fabulous tribute acts on the circuit and we offer this style of entertainment every weekend in the winter months.
We hope to welcome you back to the Royal or another Bay hotel in the near future.

We booked 2 superior rooms at this hotel as we had visitors from Australia. What a complete disaster the "superior" rooms were very poorly lit and were dark and dismal at night. Our rooms were at the front of the hotel with bay windows however the windows didn't have any sheer curtains on so, unless you closed the heavy outer curtains everyone could see into your room. The beds were king sized in these rooms BUT the sheets they use on them are double so all night long you are lying on crumpled up uncomfortable sheets. When we told reception about this they said they couldn't do anything about it.
There was insufficient parking and it was a battle every day to get a space. There was very little attention paid to access to the hotel for disabled guests and you even had to go up steps to get into the dining room.
Complaints to the staff and to Shearings who own this hotel are met with a couldn't care less attitude and no apology.
This hotel has an air of decay about it, it's well past it's best with fraying upholstry and carpets and should be avoided at all costs.
WARNING both Shearings and Bay hotels censor their customer reviews and do not publish any which give a correct but negative review.

I’m sorry to see you were disappointed with certain aspects of your stay. Our superior rooms are usually very popular with many returning guests. It’s true that the bedrooms do not have any kind of net/sheer curtains in place but as these rooms are all on upper levels this doesn’t usually cause any problems, allowing our guests to make the most of the stunning views on offer in these rooms. I’m sorry that you found the rooms to be “dark and dismal” with the ceiling lights, bedside lamps and standing lamp, had this been brought to our attention during your stay we would certainly have been able to provide additional lighting. The beds in the superior rooms are double beds on which we use double sheets so I am concerned as to the problems you encountered with the beds, which is something I will be sure to take up with my Head Housekeeper.
Parking can be limited especially at the weekend but this is something we try to control as best we can. The parking situation is detailed in our brochures and on our website as is the fact that the hotel may not be suitable for people with limited mobility, although in the vast majority of cases we can work around this. We have a flat/ramp entrance to the side of the lounge bar and in the event where we have guests with mobility issues which causes problems with the stairs into the Restaurant we regularly offer guests the choice of a table to be set up in the lounge bar.
I am concerned as to your comments regarding the staff. As a team, we pride ourselves on our customer care and as you will see from other reviews on here we often get complimented on the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff.
I would just like to point out that we have no control over what is posted on this site and are in complete favour of a clear picture being portrayed.
I would have liked the opportunity to discuss your disappointment during your stay.

Thank you for taking the time to pass on your thoughts. At the hotel we are constantly making improvements but as you can imagine in a building as large and as busy as the Royal this is an ongoing plan. As I am sure you will have noticed during your stay we have already updated a number of areas throughout the hotel. I will pass your comments regarding the food and the friendly staff to the team who always enjoy receiving good feedback. Our bottles of wine do start at £13.50 which in today’s market is quite competitive, with wine available by the glass/caraffe also.
We hope to welcome you to the Royal again, sometime in the future.
