“Dreadful food!”
Reviewed 15 September 2012

Normally we use the internet and tripadvisor to research our choice of hotel but this time we were on our way down from Northumberland and had limited access to a computer. Because I have loved Whitby from being a child and not having been there for some years the lovely photo of the Bay Hotel looked like just the spot for our last two nights in Yorkshire. I could reiterate and empathise with some of the comments I have now read on this website - such as dusty corners in rooms, a lift that is supposed to serve the whole hotel but only takes 4 people without luggage and 2 people with - but my main complaint was with the food. I did not expect 'haute cuisine' but our country produces good food which, properly cooked, is excellent. I have expressed my dissatisfaction to Shearings, the owners of the hotel, and have been given the usual soft soap response that doesn't say anything but having vented my annoyance I was really irritated to be told that the subject of food and its quantity is 'subjective'. Maybe so but I think most people would find the four thin strips of iceberg lettuce, two almost transparent slices of cucumber and a quarter of a tomato did not warrant the description of 'salad'. The quality of Whitby scampi is well known, so I am surprised that the local Chamber of Commerce do not require the Bay to remove scampi from their menu because the half dozen overcooked - dare I say two or three times cooked - toothbreaking balls of scampi that accompanied the salad were an affront. Add to this soft leathery heated up unpeeled 'new' potatoes, overcooked beans and, what we finally decided had once been red cabbage to the dish and you can have no doubt that our decision to eat elsewhere on our second night was the best decision we made. AND how is it that a breakfast dish described as a Whitby kipper - so looked forward to - came out of a boil in the bag pack or I'm a monkey's uncle! Stay at the Bay by all means - it is very cheap and the staff we dealt with were under pressure all the time and remained very polite and kind to us - but for heaven's sake never, never eat there! The one thing we could not fault was the location, but Shearings couldn't do anything to spoil that could they?

I was disappointed to receive your review. We have recently re-vamped our menus and have received good feedback in general. It is clear to see however that this was not the case in your experience. Our menu’s are structured to offer something for everyone’s tastes whilst offering value for money. None of our menus state that any of our food is local as this can change throughout the year depending on availability. I’m unsure as to the comments on the scampi as we don’t offer Scampi on any of our evening meal menus and the salad you have described would have simply been a garnish.
I appreciate your comments regarding the staff, we have a great team here at the Royal.

We have stayed at the 'Royal Hotel' on 3 previous occasions but gave it a miss last year owing to an offensive and rude so called entertainer in 2010. We returned this year as we love Whitby and the surrounding areas but now wish we hadn't.

We upgraded our room to a superior for our 3 night stay. We were allocated number 108 on the first floor overlooking the harbour. Great we thought, until we saw the room! Superior?? Surely not. We were told that the room had recently been refurbished with new decor, furniture, digital tv and new bathroom suite. Ummm, dont think so. The furniture was old, tatty and had certainly seen much better days, in fact one of the hinges on the wardrobe door was unattached at one end meaning the door hung at an angle and would not close. The bathroom was dusty above head height (owing to hotel housekeeping policies stating the cleaners should not reach above head height to dust, and spend a maximum of 15 minutes in each room.) Have they not heard of dusting mops on poles which most householders use? The bath still had numerous pubic hairs in it, the large sash windows opened from the floor upwards to a height of approx 4 feet meaning you could easily fall from them, and dont forget this was a 1st floor room. Dangerous?? The matress was very tired and worn which lead to an uncomfortable 3 nights feeling most of the springs. The advertised 26" digital tv which is part of the upgrade package cannot receive digital signals as it has not been introduced to that part of the country yet even though it is advertised on the Shearings website, in their brochures and in the hotel foyer as digital tv. When we spoke to the reception lady we were met with an abrupt don't really care attitude. Although she did tell us that a lot of money had been spent on the rear exterior of the property which very few people see. I would have thought it would have been better spent on the front exterior which is now very worn and shabby and 99% of their guests see and also on new furniture. I would also suggest they may like to spend some extra money on food too. The portions have certainly deminished in size and quality and on the sunday evening they ran out of all vegetables apart from carrots so unless you were an early eater in the restaurant that evening you were served your main meal with carrots as the only vegatable!!! We also asked for reserved parking this year at £5 per day, rip off i know, but to eleviate driving round and round the streets playing parking roulette but this was overlooked as well so no reserved parking.

To really top the stay off we settled down for our entertaintment on the Saturday evening to find the same rude and offensive so called entertainer under the name of Dave Davis is still there. He had the same effect this time too. People getting up and walking out!!! How is he still there?

Will we return. NO CHANCE. Never again.

I would also suggest to anyone thinking of staying there to think hard and consider staying elsewhere. The hotel is a complete shambles and totally spoilt what should have been a lovely relaxing few days away especially in a freshly refurbished 'Superior' room. Complete and utter waste of hard earned money.

Yes, a written complaint has been made to Shearings head office.

Room Tip: The best room would be in a different hotel or guest house. Dont waste your money at this one.

We arrived at the Royal Hotel and were given room 102 a single room with seaviews for my Mother and along the corridoor in room 118 for myself and my husband . Both rooms were clean and welcoming. Room 218 was a bit chilly the first night but a heater was requested and arrived before we returned from our evening. meal. There were plenty of clean towels and the hospitality tray was refilled each day.Staff on reception , in the dining room and the cleaning staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Service with a smile, often not seen these days!
There was 1 drawback and that was the lift. it only held 4 people comfortably(less with luggage!) and it seemed to have a mind of its own. we ended up at the 3rd floor and indeed the basement at times. Some people seemed to be going up and down for some time before they got where they wanted.
The hotel is on the cliff opposite the Whalebones and the open top bus stopped at the door. It was £4 and your ticket lasted for 24 hours. We stopped off at the Abbey ruins and in the town,. the driver was helpful especially to people with wheelchairs The North Yorks railway now has some trains which call at Whitby and that is a days entertainment at least. The open top bus stopped outside the station too..if you have your own transport then Scarborough is nearby and of course the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors. we were lucky in that the heather was just coming out, really lovely.
We will certantly will be returning again.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms were worth every penny

I appreciate you taking the time to post your comments. I’m pleased to see you were happy with your rooms during your stay and that you found them to be clean and comfortable. I’ll be sure to pass your comments to all the team – comments like these can really boost morale. I understand your comments regarding the lift. It can become a little congested at busy times but the style is very much in keeping with the rest of the building. As you’ve mentioned Whitby is a lovely little town and we enjoy some of the best views from our location. There are a number of methods of public transport which means seeing Whitby and the surrounding areas is made easy. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit.

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I’m pleased to see you enjoyed your meals and found the hotel cleanliness to be of a high standard. I will look into the issues you encountered with your room and ensure the problems are rectified. As you will have noticed during your stay we have some refurbishment work being carried out at present and this will carry on to the inside of the building shortly. The sea view rooms are definitely worth the supplement. This should have been offered at the time of booking if they were available. The free parking is on a first come, first served basis. I’m pleased to see you enjoyed your stay overall.

Spent the bank holiday weekend at the Royal. Encountered problems with parking on arrival - 2 car parks, one full and the other locked off and empty. Were told that the locked area was reserved parking but this was never offered to us at the time of booking. Spent ages trying to park so not the best start. However, we had a great weekend in the end. The hotel is ok for the price we paid. The staff are great especially Becky on reception. There was a good choice at dinner and we enjoyed what we ate. The view from our room was second to none over the harbour bay and abbey. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would book again if going to Whitby.

Room Tip: Enquire about parking when booking

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We do now offer guaranteed reserved parking at £5 a day. I'm sorry if this was not communicated correctly at the time of booking. However I see this did not deter you from enjoying your stay. We strive to offer good value for money breaks and I'm glad that was your experience. Becky will be delighted to see your comments as will the rest of the team. As mentioned repeatedly on here the views from our sea view rooms are stunning. Once again thank you for your comments and we hope to welcome you back to the Royal in the not too distant future.
