“A tired old hotel”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2009

we travelled to whitby for a five day monday to friday break, first impressions from the outside was "is it still open", it looks very rundown and in dire need of decoration. Our room was on the second floor at the far corner of hotel, first impression was that the room was quite spacious and clean, looking closer we found the wallpaper was hanging off in places, the bed was rock hard and old, the windows were filthy making it difficult to see the sea view. the tv was old and there were only the basic 4 channels,
The one good thing about the hotel was the food which was excellent although served at breakneck speed by the overworked but friendly staff.
Overall i think shearings need to spend quite a lot on updating and decorating this once good hotel.

We went with Shearings. Our room was on 3rd floor very clean and comfortable.Meals were excellent.Entertainment was good with Pam and Rory. Some people must have gone to a different room than ours, and must be very fussy with the good choice of menu.We would recommend it .

Well, as anyone can see from the title of this review it's not going to be a good one! We were part of a small wedding party staying at this hotel for two nights. The hotel is a favourite for people on weekend breaks and coach holidays and was full over the two days we were there. The wedding we attended was fantastic and this is no reflection on the choice of hotel as it was what was available for the size of the wedding party. It's a peculiar grey/beige colour from the outside and doesn't look anything like a hotel, although it's absolutely huge and runs along two sides of a whole block. The rooms appear to be better on the lower floors but we were in a room on the third which was clearly in desperate need of refurbishment. The room had sheets and blankets which was a novelty and each individual spring could be felt through the bed's mattress. The television was an old fashioned portable although some of the other rooms had flatscreens. We arrived on Friday night just in time for dinner, this consisted of three or four choices from the menu card, the food was bland, cheap and nasty. Everything was mass catered and engineered to be served to as many people as quickly as possible. Fortunately we didn't have to eat there on the second night. When we went to bed I found myself walking over broken biscuits and an empty medication capsule on the floor at the side of the bed! We slept well but the seagulls start regaling you with tales of daring do on the high seas at about 5 in the morning!!
We arrived back from the wedding at teatime and went into the ballroom to see the entertainment. There was a quiz before the singer came on and although it took a while to get going she was fairly good. As soon as she finished singing there was a mass exodus from the room and we were left wondering if there was a fire! Everything just fizzled out after this and we went to a little side room for sandwiches which the bride had requested as 11 of us did not need our evening meal. There was a small tray with two types of sandwiches on and some crisps thrown around. Nobody had thought to cover them with foil or clingfilm and they were almost inedible! I found this absolutely disgusting and have never come across such poor catering.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and it is not worth £200 + for two nights, it's probably not worth the cheap weekend breaks either!
The only positive is the staff who were friendly, efficient, polite and hard-working who appear to be mostly from Eastern Europe.

food good ,though a little rushed ,Not a relaxing atmosphere as every body working very fast . excellent friendly waitress louiza. very run down bedrooms very old bed with a mattress that springs were coming through , thought better not to look under bottom sheet as i still had to sleep on it.. counterpane stained and old . whole room in need of TLC and refurbishment. Plus we had to pay extra per peron for a sea view ,cant remember if it was £15 or £20 per person so quite a lot more . love whitby the location, and the atmosphere of the the hotel and have been back about 6 times but it has deteriated beyond belief since our first visit .

Sorry but I have to agree with the bad reviews that I have seen. The hotel could do with a lick of paint on the inside doors it was all chipped. We had a lovely weekend generally but the hotel spoilt it for us. The food was disgusting they could not even manage to do roast potatoes to go with the beef. We had Potatoe croquettes Dinner was 6.30pm - 8.00pm and it was all rushed to get you in and out. The staff were nice but I would not reccomend this hotel to anyone. Shearings who own it really need to invest some money into it. Sorry shearings you may get the bookings but you need to invest some ot the money that people spend to stay there on the hotel itself.

I have read the other reviews about this hotel and can't belive it was the same one. My husband and i have just returned after having a few days there. We have recently had our ruby wedding anniversary, but did not celebrate as we would have liked because i had just come out of hospital. So our trip was to celebrate and recuperate. We went with Shearings. All staff were excellent. meals were fantastic. Bedroom was comfortable. Service always with a cheerful comment and a smile. We had some good company with another couple on our dining table. Enjoyed hilarious entertainment.
The only problem we had was that we did not know that all feader coaches went to stratton and we had to wait there for another coach going and returning. Unfortunately when I did get home I was exhausted after such a long day. Otherwise excellent little holiday, reasonably priced, good value all round .
Would go again but would self drive or at least park the car at stretton.

In the main I agree completely with the comments of PSBTexas from Dallas Texas. My wife and I stayed 8th-12th Sep 2008. Our major criticism must be directed at our bedroom on the third floor overlooking the car park. The decoration was very poor and we feel that the bedroom staff because of this are having their work made very difficult to clean the rooms. The wall between the two windows was damp/wet from floor level to about four to five feet. The single glazed wooden framed windows were mouldy and the paint work almost non existent. The water pressure was poor in the bathroom and the water only luke warm by 8 a.m. One of the beds had an over size mattress which over lapped the bed frame.
The Dining room decor and furniture was of a good standard but our food was served only warm and on cold plates. Certainly the Head Chef and his staff have little pride in what they are presenting. The waiters seemed to be training for a marathon and almost ran in and out of the rooms - but they were all very pleasant with the diners.
The Hotel is very 'tired' and there appears to be little management supervision. The problems of our bedroom were reported to the receptionist on our second day but we heard nothing in response.
The Resident Entertainment Duo worked so very hard and were extremely professional in their cabaret presentation.
This was our third 'Shearings' (and last) holiday as we feel that we became part of a captive group of people who fill the rooms and satisfy the statistics and accountants of the company.
Unless money is spent on this hotel and management show an interest and present themselves, the staff will not have the incentive to be associated with a standard which at the moment is far from satisfactory.
