“Loved the hotel and we will be coming back!”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

I'd read the reviews about this hotel before booking so was already aware of the possibility of lots of noise from the harbour and the local hostelries, so this wasn't a surprise. This wasn't a problem for us as we were two of those very people spending time in those hostelries! But, as has been mentioned before, don't book this one if you want a quiet night!
We found the location ideal for our night in Whitby and didn't bring the car, so didn't have the stress of trying to park.
The hotel staff were really helpful and friendly and on showing us to our room (Room 4) told us about there being no tea/coffee facilities in the room and that all we needed to do was phone and they would bring it. Which indeed they did!
The room was lovely, very clean and the bed REALLY comfy, but the only thing I had a problem with was some noisy plumbing in the bathroom - regular noises from the pipework - which kept me awake for a couple of hours. I remedied this by putting tissue paper in my ears, and that seemed to do the trick.
Breakfast was fab and we had a live pianist playing relaxing tunes while we ate - don't get that very often!
Not the cheapest hotel but in this case (in our opinion) you get what you pay for.
We'll be back!!

This is definitely a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel. Whilst the staff were friendly, we felt as though staying at The Marine played second fiddle to the excellent restaurant and bar downstairs. The reception is the bar, and you feel a bit awkward when you arrive as you bring your suitcase in from outside and navigate it round the diners. Our room (number 3) was lovely, very stylishly appointed, large and comfortable. However, there were some small practical minor issues. There are no hooks on doors, no chest of drawers (small drawer you could fit a book in in the bedside tables), and there is absolutely no parking. We were advised to keep on driving down the harbourside road the hotel is on, until we got to the free parking which starts about 500 metres away, and if you're lucky you can bagsy a space on 'Khyber Pass'.

The Marine is situated right in the thick of it. This is both good and bad (and we were fully aware of this when we picked it), as you step right out into the town and enjoy everything Whitby has to offer. However, the weekend noise was very loud and went on very late, coming from the main harbourside drag and the local pubs and restaurants. This didn't bother us hugely, but you may like to note it if you are looking for a quiet retreat.

The breakfast at The Marine is outstanding. They have a wide selection you can order from, in addition to the more usual Full English, all of which were delicious, we tried something different every day. We also had a meal with The Marine one evening, and again the standard of food was excellent and very well priced for the quality you get.

Room Tip: There are only 4 rooms and they all looked lovely.

This is the second time we have stayed here.
Initially we booked two nights in room 1 , a Birthday suprise for my partner.
Unfortunately the cleanliness and maintenance of the room ( in particular the toilet) was not great but did not get in the way of a great weekend. The staff were great when this was brought to their attention and we were offered a free night's accomodation whenever we wanted.
Positives
The location of the room is fantastic, spots like this are few and far between. Yes it's noisy but what do you expect when you overlook a busy harbour full of people, working boats and shrieking gulls....I didn't mind this and my partner wore earplugs.
The food is absolutely superb and the breakfast is one of the best I've had.
The staff are extremely helpful and obliging
Negatives
Cheap and nasty toiletries, thin towels, really cheap/ nasty paper slippers and lack of dressing gowns ( a must first thing in the conservatory area or on the balcony or you risk giving passersby an eyeful)
No Tea/ Coffee making facilities. There is nothing in the room that explains why this is the case or any literature explaining that you can ring for it. The staff will bring drinks up but they are not available 24/7 - not everyone wants to make themselves look decent to answer the door for your cuppa first thing!
The lack of door on the toilet is not great and can 'contaminate' the whole room so retreat to the balcony is the only option until the coast is clear.

All in all at £150 / night I would expect all the little extras you usually get with other similarly priced hotels...the superficial 'boutique decor' and location on their own do not justify the price.

Room Tip: Take earplugs, dressing gown, your own toiletries and ask for a newspaper

Stayed in room 4. They are all different, so check first. Paid £140 per room per night for 2 nights.

Lovely big room, nicely done out in a cod-Louis XIV style. The big bathroom is next to the sleeping area, and has a central pedestal bath with views to the abbey, which is lovely.

Downside is, toilet is in the same room and there are no doors. An issue if someone has had a heavy night on the Tetleys.

No tea making in the room, they just bring it up for free when you ask, which is nice.

Room door handle was broken, but mended quickly. OTOH, why wasn't it done before we arrived?

Evening meal was okay, but when it came to help with the wine, the young waiter cheerfully admitted that he didn't have a clue. You can't claim to offer the boutique hotel experience, and charge accordingly, when the waiter's wine knowledge goes as far as red or white.

Breakfast was very nice, but again on the first morning took an age to arrive. It wasn't deliberate ignorance, all the staff were perfectly agreeable, just not paying attention to, and controlling, what was happening in their space.

Also, what they don't mention is the total lack of parking. You have to park at the end of the road, up the hill, about 400 yds. Then, walk back down to the hotel. We are reasonably trim and travel light, but it would be a deal-breaker for many.

It is basically a nice place, with a nice atmosphere, just not the finished article.

Room Tip: 4 rooms, all different. See review.

The rooms were large and fabulously furnished and decorated. Dinner in the restaurant was superb as was breakfast. The location in the heart of Whitby was perfect for us but could be a bit noisy for some. We had a beautiful roll top bath in our room but no door!I am sorry but some things need privacy!
