This was our first ever stay at a hostel and I must admit we were a bit apprehensive about what to expect. However, we were very impressed. Our family room was very spacious but we spent most of our time in the conservatory and outside the building where there was a lovely lawned area and vegetable garden to explore. The staff were very friendly, keeping the children amused, and did all they could to make our stay enjoyable. We loved the vegetarian option in all the meals as we usually eat halal. We pre-booked our breakfast and it was varied and delicious. The only improvement needed would be a proper dusting of the rooms and furniture and a good bleach clean of the toilet and shower area. There were very old cobwebs in the high ceilings and around the curtain poles as well as dust gathered in the corners of the carpeted floor. Also found the toilet and shower drains very smelly on arrival. However, overall I was still very happy with our stay and are already planning our next stay here again.

Very decent YHA at a good price, beautiful location behind the Abbey and the free entry was a very nice suprise touch! Hostel was clean and services adequate but somehow it felt the most 'corporate' of all the hostels we've been to. The lounge is very modern but chairs aren't actually too comfortable for a weary walker! Staff at times weren't easy to locate and the ladies doing breakfast were at times a little lacking in charm.

Overall a very good experience, recommended for a stay in Whitby. The quickest means in/out of Whiby is by foot on the 199 steps, if you're only doing this 2 times a day it's fine for the average person.

thank you for the positive review. Yes whitby can get a bit blustery but it adds to the gothic setting of the hostel. Hope to sse you again

My Partner and I had originally booked a three bedroom room for the night but thankfully we were able to downgrade to a double room upon arrival.
If you are an active couple, set on seeing the sights of Whitby rather than just going at the same pace you would at home, then this is the hostel for you. Situated at the top of the hill and shouldering Whitby Abbey itself, the hostel provides a great vantage point for viewing the bay below.
The only shortcoming of the location is that it is a ten minutes walk from town. This could be a problem on a night time as the best route back to the hostel by foot is up the famous Abbey steps, where it can get a little windy. If you intend on going down into the town for a few beverages at night-time, you might want to consider getting a taxi back to the hostel.

Room Tip: The hostel is behind the museum, at the other end of the courtyard from the turning circle.

Thank you for your positive review. Really happy you enkoyed your stay. Sorry about the 199 steps they are easier going down but view is excellent.

On a wonderful hot sunny cycling weekend a group of 30 of us stayed at YHA Whitby. Fantastic location, amazing views across the bay. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Rooms clean, fresh and very comfortable. Breakfast spot on. If your cycling, walking or visiting the area the hostel is defiantly worth staying at. Spot on!
