This is a very traditional style pub in the heart of Whitby. You can get a large selection of real ale's and other drinks. This is one of the more expensive pubs in the town, but many of the other bars are Sam Smith's and nobody can compete with those prices!
They offer a limited selection of food, like Yorkshire Tapas and they also have a good stock of Kettlechips behind the bar (much preferable than Walkers).
The pub is small but has a lovely atmosphere, its very much a chill out pub, and they don't play loud music etc but its lovely and relaxing.
Everyone in the pub is friendly, we always get talking to someone new, and the staff are brilliant, their customer service is truly exceptional.
The pub does offer accomodation, which we have used a couple of times. Nice, tidy and clean rooms with breakfast the next morning. Very amiable indeed.
We generally visit this watering hole everytime we are in Whitby, especially when we have our dog with us, as they are by far the most dog friendly pub in the town.

A small, quaint & traditional seaside pub where you get a warm & friendly welcome from the staff. Has a small selection of well kept real ales which are reasonably priced compared to the rest of the U.K. Will next again when next in the area.

I visited Whitby on Monday 18 November and after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to taste the atmosphere of The Black Horse, this 'Great Pub with friendly warm welcoming staff'. On walking into the side entrance room we were confronted with this enormous dog sprawled across the floor whose owner made no attempt to shift it so we could get to the bar. After striding over the dog we had to wait an age before the surly, unfriendly barmaid came through from the bar to serve us beer from the only stocked real ale pump in that room. That was overpriced and didn't taste very nice so we strode again over the large prostrate dog and had a pleasant few beers in the nearby warm and friendly Duke of York. The next time we visit Whitby I think we will give The Black Horse a miss. Perhaps I did go in the wrong Pub but it looked very much like the one on the photograph!!

The Black Horse is what I would term a traditional pub, although limited snacks at the bar and guest rooms are available.
If you enjoy a quiet drink without tripping over kids, sharing a table with people eating 3 course meals, being subject to others selections of music ( though they have had live music on occasion which I think was impromptu) and drinking over priced bottled lager type beers, this could be a place for you to spend a pleasant evening or just an hour or two.
They have guest beers and ciders which are generally kept well and the staff are very pleasant especially the lady who has been there for many years; probably the owner, I will have to ask next time.
This type of pub is becoming rarer and rarer so call and ensure we don't lose them.

I stayed for two nights, and found the room clean and comfortable. The pub is great - though the food offerings are minimal, the beer is terrific, and the place is just comfortable to be in (and there are so many restaurants nearby that food is not really necessary). The location is excellent - right in the middle of old Whitby, a short distance from the harbor and the steps to the abbey. I would definitely stay here again.

Whilst daughter was away on school trip I decided to book the wife and I into The Black Horse for a couple of nights ( back end of March 13).We got a very warm welcome on arrival by bar staff who showed us to our room.Although the weather was freezing and windy our room was warm and comfortable.Staff very helpful . After an enjoyable stay we booked for a return visit with our daughter. The weather being a little warmer we found we couldn't put the heating on when it got cold during the night.3 of us slept in the same bed to keep warm.We decided we'll visit the bar again but wont stop again overnight.Dont know who landlady is because she never introduced herself which was biggest disappointment as rest of staff were so nice.

Room Tip: Basic accomodation and noisy early morning with locals moving bins setting up stalls etc.
