If you like walking, and I mean REALLY like walking, then an HF Holiday at Whitby at Larpool Hall is a fantastic option.

This is a 'hard core' walking holiday for families, many of whom have been before. We were there in June 2010.

This was no ordinary hiking holiday, there were ten other families and loads of kids our daughter’s age which was lovely to see. This one was based in Whitby in the North Yorkshire Moors. We opted for this area as Captain James Cook (heard of him?!) did his apprenticeship and grew up in the area and so we learned a lot about his past and it really brought history alive for us.

Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ was also inspired and partly set here so they run night tours for the Goth followers armed with garlic! Whitby Abbey, founded in 657 AD, sits high on a hill overlooking the harbour and can be reached via 199 steps, which adds to its eerie & romantic beauty. One day we hiked to the tiny village of Goathland – ‘Aidensfield’ to those who followed the ‘Heartbeat’ series, where they still have the shops and old cars used in the show. It was all so picturesque and memorable!

The kids (one as young as 6!) hiked up to 14km a day and actually enjoyed it (not that they’d admit it!) as they took in the scenery and ate heaps whilst not really realising how far they were walking. They had such a great time together; no TV, no computers, just fresh air and good sleep – eventually!

We met some lovely people during the adults’ 20km a day hikes who book these trips annually and now we have found them we will book again from Oz. (Check out hfholidays.co.uk). They have 17 properties around Britain and each hotel is a rambling old house (including two National Trust homes) located in areas with beautiful scenery and history. They have a huge variety of walking, cycling tours and other weeks of painting, photography or yoga etc.

Larpool Hall has one or two rooms with their own bathrooms so book these if you can for a small premium! It is a communal experience so share with the other famiiles and you will have a great time.

Having just returned from a Family Holiday Walking Week at HF Holidays' Whitby Country House, Larpool Hall, we can both (my daughters aged 8) highly recommend both the hotel and the holiday.

You are made to feel so welcome by the hotel staff and volunteer leaders that you feel at home immediately and its so easy to make friends in this sociable environment. The leaders not only lead for levels of walks including a Family Walk for little legs but organise games and activities each evening. We even had our own open-top bus tour around Whitby one evening and mini-Olympics that grandparents, adults and children all enjoyed.

The staff were consistently friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was good too and plenty of it too, handy if you have been out walking all day. The house is located a 20 minute spectacular walk from Whitby across the old railway viaduct but can be reached by bus from the town. The grounds themselves are big enough to host a guided walk!

If this is what an HF Holidays Family Walking Holiday is like in other parts of the UK, they run them in Cornwall, North Yorkshire and on the Isle of White, my daughter and I will be booking for next year. Hope to see you there!

Although the Hall is mainly used by HF groups, individuals can book and will be warmly welcomed by both the staff and the walking groups. As has been stated, food is served on tables of 8 complete with a lazy susan to spin round. The food is good to very good with a reasonable choice, good service and convivial, though generally older, company. Packed lunches can be arranged. We had a premium room which was large and had a nice view outside. The en-suite was also large with a reasonably sized shower. There was a strange 2 seater (more 1.5 in todays society) settee and we thought the pillows were a bit hard. Wi fi was patchy in our room but useable. There was a kettle with a reasonable supply of tea and coffee and you can pick up extra in the bar if needed. There wasn't a small fridge or a safe.
Overall it was comfortable and friendly with a variety of public rooms, plus HF entertainments at night which unfortunately coincided with the Euro 2012 football.

Room Tip: I've twice used HF premium rooms which are a little more expensive but each time I've been p...

Nice and clean, hunt for staff to be able to book in though. If you dont like sitting with other people at the breakfast table its not for you. Better for large groups than couples.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that face the Esk Valley

I have just spent a week at Larpool Hall as part of a walking group of about 35 people. To describe it as an overpriced Youth Hostel and give it the lowest rating possible as someone has done is in my opinion extremely disingenuous. The hotel is orientated towards groups of walkers and supplies organised travel and routes for different levels of walking ability on a daily basis. This is reflected in the shared tables at meal times. If you want a table to yourself, stay at an ordinary hotel. My room (I was a single person in a twin) was spacious and comfortable and certainly up to 4 star rating, this standard being reflected in what I saw of the rest of the hotel including the bar and lounge area.
The food was of good quality including a large breakfast choice of which the scrambled egg was so excellent I had it a;lmost every day, however had perchance scrambled egg not been available it would not have bothered me sufficiently to whinge about it here. The packed lunches were the best I've had anywhere, allowing you to choose what you wanted the night before, with a huge array of additional goodies available on the day. As a vegetarian I could not fault what I was given for my evening meals and not once (as so often happens) did the staff place the wrong meal before me; indeed I was impressed by the dedication of the staff who went out of their way to be helpful at all times. This is an excellent place to stay.
