“Lovely retreat!”
Reviewed 15 June 2012

We've stayed in several places on this trip to the UK and Raithwaite Hall was a lovely and elegant stop. They are currently doing some construction to expand facilities, but the main buildings are quiet and lovely. The rooms are superior and the breakfast option had a nice buffet. It was nice to be able to dine in the restaurant, or the bar...both offered great menu selections. Sandsend is a short walk, or you can enjoy the pool. We felt this was a wonderful retreat!

We had originally booked 3 nights here to explore Whitby and surrounding area and found this quite nice place just outside Whitby. We extended our stay by one further day as the weather at the end of May was not to be missed. It's true the site is still under some construction but this isn't generally near the main building and did not really interfere with our stay. Room was comfortable although a trouser press would be a useful addition at this price point, even Travelodge have these. The gardens are wonderful if difficult to get to or make use of. It's clear that the layout was modified in some way as to get to the gardens/outside space you have to go throught the restaurant which seemed intrusive and maybe why it seemed discouraged by staff. Although by the end of our stay breakfast was being offered on the terrace as the weather was good but this seemed a new and experimental offering. I guess it was the first decent weather to make use of the out door space.

Restaurant food was generally good if a little pricey and the bar food was as good if a less formal experience is required. We took 2 nights in each.

Very helpful staff, assisted with baggage, pool nice, would return if/when in the area as the quality seems predictable. Not bad considering it's still in its first year.

We went for my birthday weekend (well, Tuesday and Wednesday), having heard very good things about it from a friend. Champagne (as ordered unbeknown to me) was in our room chilling when we arrived, staff very polite and efficient and room very nice with a balcony and pleasant view over the immaculately-manicured gardens. WiFi worked reasonably well, although there was no mobile reception (a blessing I think). We didn't eat at the Hotel, so cannot comment on the food. We did, however, use the swimming pool, gym and sauna, and they were great. The pool in particular is really lovely, and a pleasant place to wile away a couple of hours to convince yourself you've done some exercise! The gym is small but reasonably equipped with two treadmills, a couple of bikes, weights and a TV.

The only small fly in the ointment was a constant banging from below (the floor below - we were on the second) from around 6.30am, which kept my wife awake both mornings. We told the staff who, after the first night, said it might be the door-closing mechanisms which were being upgraded at that time, although the chap on reception the next morning wondered if it was coming from the kitchens or the early staff. A relatively small thing, but you do go to places like this for the peace and quiet as much as anything else.

Altogether, a lovely time. If I had to criticise it, I would say it was just ever so slightly soulless.

Stayed here for 2 nights last weeked. Nice hotel. friendly polite staff.
We both had spa treatments, massages were good, pedicure not so good, i've had better elsewhere.Loved the pool etc, had the facilities to ourselves both mornings, totally unexpected.
Room was nice although not what i would have expected from a suite. Bathroom lovely, shower pressure weak, shower tray very slippery.
Restuarant was good for breakfast, be early have heard the restaurant gets busy later in the morning.
Enjoyed our stay & would love to visit again.

Room Tip: our room was on the southside which didn't have a good view. 3rd floor was quiet.

Stayed here last night with the wife as we found it on the Internet and it looks great. Turned up at reception with our bags and our hands were quite full but no one offered to carry them or help us to our room so we struggled. Rooms are great and comfortable with Molton Brown products on offer in the bathroom. Resturant evening meal had soup to start and found the green Hearn in the bottom of the bowl point less and I found myself having to tip my bowl up to get my soup on my spoon which tells me the bowls are over sized for the portion. Other than that the whole meal was great wine wine and coffee in the bar. Had a great nights sleep very warm and cosy. Breakfast was the most disappointing with me ordering poriage which took about 10 minutes to come and when it did it was Luke warm at best and then when I asked for syrup that took another 5 minutes to source , moved on to kippers with toast and ordered pouched eggs . Eggs great well cooked and kippers done to putrefaction but were was my toast ? It's the little touches that start to go a miss that starts to send standards dropping. Would rate this hotel a 5 star if the few little attention to detail bits are addressed. Even thou I had a couple of bits go wrong would I stay again YES of course a great Place to stay and treat yourself. 4.9 out of 5 . Thumbs up !

Marco7242,
Thank you for your review and the
comments you noted - it is the addition of small
issues when added up, that can often make the
whole experience disappointing. I won't reply to
each individual comment you make but suffice
to say that we have taken them on board.

Its great feedback like this, that will help us
achieve something special at Raithwaite.
Look forward to welcoming you back soon

First and foremost, this is not a Luxury Hotel. Neither is it unique (unfortunately).

The built quality is average at best (have a closer look) and has a great deal in common with a lot of housing estates built over recent years, reproduction Adams fireplace omitted. They are still building by the way, entrance is a building site.

Couldn’t relax, woke up by refuse collection right outside room Friday, the ceiling in our room shook whenever someone walked across it in the room above: woken at 5am Saturday morning. That room is £245 per night!

Food was poor quality for the asking price, Vegetarians beware! My evening meal was appalling being part over cooked and part under cooked and tasteless.

Room Tip: Don't.
