....well maybe not the best hotel in the world but certainly the best in this part of the world and fantastic value.
Two of us paid £120 for a relaxing one night stay with full use of spa facilties and breakfast. There is an option to pay a little extra for a larger room but we really didn't see the need: our room (303) was on the top floor, spacious, clean with a beautiful bathroom and everything you could reasonably need, so save your money for a spa treatment instead.
The spa area is in the lower ground floor of the hotel and consists of a decent sized pool (1.2 metres depth so suitable for youngsters), a steam room, sauna and spa-pool with hot tables and plenty of loungers to relax upon. There is a small gym but neither of us used it (C'mon guys, you're having a relaxing break!!) and a variety of spa treatments are available (see the website). If you want to take advantage of this, it's probably worth booking ahead because there was only very limited availability and you may be disappointed.
We didn't eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on the dinner service, preferring instead to have a leisurely walk into town via the picturesque cliff top walk. It takes about an hour to get to West Cliff and a little longer to cross into town.
A taxi back cost £6.00 and takes about 10 minutes. We had a great nights' sleep in the most peaceful hotel I have stayed in for a long time; no slamming doors, no general hotel noise and no passing traffic. The next morning we enjoyed a beautiful breakfast consisting of (mainly) locally sourced cooked breakfast items and a cold buffet with yoghurt, fruit and freshly baked breads and pastries, which was delicious and set us up for the whole day. Only bug-bear I have was the £5 supplement for certain items including kippers - a trip to Whitby really isn't complete without a kipper but I thought it should have been included.
Every member of staff was friendly and helpful (particular mention to Pete the Porter who was very convivial and knowledgable) and every little detail from the toiletries to the external gardens were meticulously thought about and taken care of.
£120 (not including spa treatments) it is not a lot of money and we left feeling pampered and relaxed. Treat yourself, you know you deserve it!
