“HISTORY AND CHARACTER”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

This was our 3rd or 4th visit to the WH&G, we love Whitby and staying here you are in the heart of the town.Parking is always a problem in Whitby and until the set up a Park and Ride which should keep 50/60% of the car users out of town it always will be. The Hotel is a delight, just having been taken over by new owners who are trying to improve some of the very old aspects of the Hotel without loosing the character. For some unknown reason our room had not been serviced prior to us booking in, they thought it has as we had clean towels and toiletries on the bed but nothing had been cleaned, but they soon rectified it the bed was changed, the bathroom cleaned and the tea tray sorted. The did apologize and compensated by a nice bottle of wine with Dinner. The food in the Restaurant was excellent as it has been in the past, I think the same chef is still there, lets hope he stays. So if you want a nice olde worlde Hotel in the middle of the Old part of Whitby with good food look no further.

Room Tip: All the rooms have some thing different about them, no straight walls, so have a look at them on the...

Enjoyed our 2 nights in the Charles Darwin room. Nice, clean & atmospheric. Hotel is in the old part of Whitby, brilliant location. Restaurant was really good, plenty to choose from. Breakfast was also very good.
If you want a hotel with character this is the place to go.

We stayed recently with my family for my 40th birthday celebration and had a wonderful time. The hotel is really well situated in the centre of Whitby; the staff were very welcoming. Our room was the Wakeful - it had a very comfy bed with good quality soft furnishings and all spotlessly clean. Dinner in the restaurant was the highlight of our stay. The staff and chef were very accommodating of special dietary requirements and amongst the dishes our party tried, the fillet of beef for 2 and the seafood meze looked and tasted amazing! We will definitely return and wish owner Ed and the team the very best for the future.

Room Tip: Ask for details as all the rooms were individually decorated.

Good points:
Nice breakfast
Attentive breakfast service
Central location

Bad points:
Tiny room - barely room for an overnight bag
Bed was a 1.5 or at most a small double
Tiny bathroom with no shelves for toiletry bags (got soaked if left on end of the shower/ bath which had a mischievous head)
Noisy
Hot
Corridors smelled of fish
Housekeeping banging on door first thing on a morning and also failed to clean shower & toilet
Little or no reception on TV

In a nutshell not worth half of the £90 odd quid a night we paid.

This is a lovely quaint hotel in the historic old part of Whitby. Our suitcase was carried upstairs by a member of staff on reception, all of whom were friendly and welcoming. We stayed in the room on the top floor, Helga Maria, it had lots of original features, but was bright and airy with good decor and soft furnishings and a comfy bed. The curtains were excellent quality and ensured the room was not too bright in the morning. The en suite bathroom was also bright and airy and a good size.
We had an evening meal in the restaurant, the food was good as was the service. The staff were friendly and pleasant and the ambience of the restaurant was pleasant.
Whilst the breakfast does not have a buffet, there was a varied choice on the menu including kedgeree and a Fortunes kipper and the breakfast was excellent.
I will definitely return to this hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms on the top floor are accessed by several flights of stairs which are steep. If mobility is...

We were bought a gift voucher from the children for Christmas, decided to go to a favourite haunt of mine Whitby. Stayed in the Provider room, shower not the best but what a fab place.

We recommend the food, its gorgeous especially the beef for two people. Staff friendly and efficient and location central for the attractions.

It has kept its old theme and reeks of history and Charles Dickens...will be going back.

Room Tip: Top floor may be better as you can hear people coming in though you may have to listen to the gulls...

This is a lovely former coaching inn, in the heart of old Whitby. It has been superbly renovated in the past and it retains most of its old features. The bar is small but really cosy and atmospheric.

The welcome from the staff was really genuine and friendly. That was the case throughout our 2 night stay.

The room was small, as you would expect from such an old building, but really nicely furnished. The shower left something to be desired, but I think the refurbishment process is ongoing so I expect that will be rectified.

The only real gripe was that the £90 a night room rate didn't include breakfast, which seemed a bit tight. We were told on check-in that breakfast would be an extra £7 each. What made matters worse was the blurb in the room said that breakfast was complimentary to all guests! I stay in a lot of hotels so have a pretty good idea of what represents value for money. £90 for room only in Whitby is just a little bit high, hence I only gave it 3/5 for value.

Other than that it is an excellent place with a superb location.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
