Stayed at the white horse and griffin for a long weekend, we were given a good welcome by the staff and later in the evening met Ed the owner who was a very pleasant man.
Our room was the Bagatelle at the top of the house, which was lovely though a bit of a climb, so no good if you have walking difficulties. We didn't eat in the restaurant so cannot comment but everything looked lovely.
Great location and would visit again.

Room Tip: The Bagatelle is lovely but be prepared to climb

We visited Whitby for the first time for my birthday weekend and booked The White Horse and Griffin from a search engine.
The hotel is full of character and every room is different which only adds to its charm.
We had lunch in the bar before we checked in and although the deep fryer was broken so we couldn't experience the famous Whitby fish.. the lunch was still tasty. One bar staff must have been quite new or 'something'.. as when I ordered a small wine, she told me it only comes in a large then proceeded to top my half-full wine glass up and still charge me full price?!
While we were staying, the fire alarm went in the middle of the night and two guests were evacuated due to a water pipe flooding the rooms.
The breakfast was nice, although the service was a little strange. Waitresses taking things away we had yet to use, but leaving other tables uncleared.
The location is excellent but the car park was 100 yards away and we struggled to get a space.

The white Horse and Griffin looks Quant, Charming and certainly inviting from the outside, however this appears to be a totally different story on the inside.
I have stayed in many hotels, bed and breakfasts in the past and loved them all. The White Horse and Griffin I would not rate as such. We booked the break and was set to go, in the meantime I was sent an email from the White Horse and Griffin confirming our booking including the name of the room we were to stay in, Warrior Queen.
This room did not materialise! Yes we were given an attic room instead. there were steep steps from the door to the room (approx.eight) so if you were not of a certain fitness you would not have made into you bed for night. when you eventually do make it to to your bed (in the ATTIC) you may feel like brushing your teeth if you don't mind cracking the top of your head on the door frame every time you need the loo then go for it.
So you've brushed your teeth and all you want to do is climb into a comfy warm bed, don't forget you are in an ATTIC so you have to be able to bend and walk at 45 degrees not always easy when you've had a couple of drinks (not many) if you avoided the bang on the head brushing your teeth don't worry because the room from Hell will catch you in the end. Oh and by the way the room is Bagattelle.
So unless you want the "Anne Frank experience without the expense stay at home in your own Attic.

We stayed in the Bagatelle room which was up in the loft and it was lovely. We had dinner in the restaurant which was fantastic and such a nice atmosphere. The only issue we had was with the water in the bathroom - it made some scary noises and at one point the hot tap decided to stop working but other than that a great stay - really enjoyed it and would recommend it to everyone.

Room Tip: During the night there was a great deal of noise coming from the seagulls which woke me up at 3am an...

This hotel sits in the old part of Whitby . Very comfortable with old world charm. Rooms are clean and nicely decorated. Lovely breakfast and told by locals wonderful meals although didn't have long enough to sample myself. Only real downside is parking, something mist hotels suffer from in the area.

Stayed at this hotel overnight with our Grandson, we had a room on the top floor, all the rooms have names and ours was called the Revolution, the room was very nice the only let down was the bathroom it was in need of a makeover but for one night it was ok. The breakfast was one of the best I have ever seen and the staff were really nice, would definitely stay again.

We stayed for one night in this amazing and historical hotel. This place is a real gem, quirky and steeped in history. Perfectly situated on the East side, it is very special. Recently refurbished, it looks amazing. We stayed in the Provider room and we got it at a reduced rate, which I think is a fairer price. The bathroom is a little tired, but it didn't spoil our stay, we loved the room. The menu is a little expensive but well worth it, the food was excellent. The restaurant was an experience and very popular. Breakfast was very good too. The staff were also very helpful and friendly and they are doing a great job refurbishing the hotel, we will definitely return to this very unique hotel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
