“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 October 2013

my husband and i stayed this weekend and i have to say how disappointing it was. The curtains were hanging off so you could not close them properly and with our windows over looking the court yard this was a privacy issue. The toilet seat was hanging off! The room was advertised as a bath shower it was a bath with a shower head not a shower. I requested a bottle of champagne to be on ice in our room with a personalized note for my husband. The champagne was there no note so defeated the object of why the champagne was there. The staff i have to say were lovely and so was the food but for the price you are paying in my opinion it is just not worth it.

Stayed here on 11th July. Can't remember name of room but it was on top floor. Room and bathroom were quite big and spotlessly clean. Bed was the comfiest I think I've ever slept in. Bathroom only had bath no shower. Room could have done with a lick of paint but website states all rooms are undergoing refurbishment. Breakfast was good. Good location near everything. Would stay again.

We visited the White Horse and Griffin this summer, 10 years after our last stay and had a wonderful time. We had a fantastic meal in the evening and the breakfast was fantastic. We loved our atmospheric little room in the attic with its great views over the Whitby rooftops. We've promised not to leave it so long until we go back again!

This is the kind of place you want to stay in in a town like Whitby. A former coaching inn which is now a hotel and restaurant, the staff are passionate about the White Horse & Griffin and it shows. We stayed for 2 nights and had a great stay with only 2 issues, the shower wasn't great and no bathroom should have carpeting, the last issue was a leak in the ceiling whenever the upstairs had a shower! Thankfully this was usually in the morning so didn't affect us majorly, just a concern about whether the drips would become a torrent! The duty manager was v understanding and refunded our second night which was nice. We did eat in the restaurant our first night, a bit late on when it was about to close but the staff managed to accommodate us, and I'm glad they did as it was a great meal in pleasant surroundings. I'll be sure to stay here again!

My husband and I met here, had our wedding evening here, been for meals here so hence found it fitting to stay here for our 15th wedding anniversary. The new owners have allowed that lovely 'quirk' to remain whilst adding a newer even better class to it. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

We stayed here on Saturday and Sunday night as a last getaway before Autumn sets in. The building is a charming 300 year old coaching house with twists and turns into rooms and corridors on several levels. We occupied the Wakeful, a double room on the first floor overlooking the narrow pedestrianised street at the front of the hotel.
The room was pleasantly appointed with a nice bathroom with a double-ended bathtub. A leather Chesterfield allowed us to watch the television in comfort.
We both enjoyed a superb breakfast each morning of our stay - Fortune kippers are a must if you stop here - on Sunday we had a traditional Sunday dinner which was of the same high quality.
The staff we dealt with were polite and helpful, (a non-working television remote was replaced immediately).
The only downsides in my opinion were that the bar was more an ante-room for diners than a traditional pub bar. And a lack of attention to detail, the breakfast prices differed from the website (included) and the menus in the room and the restaurant. A beautiful toilet in the bistro had a loose cistern flush. Even the 'vacancy' signs in adjacent windows were contradictory. A little more care would transform the establishment from great to outstanding.

We are ladies in our 50’s, 3 in total and we were so looking forward to staying in this quaint old pub. The photos on the web sites show rooms of high standards. This was not the case, 3 of us stayed in the attic room, up very steep, dangerous, flights of stairs with no offer of help with our bags. We stayed in the resolution room and paid £120 for the unfortunate privilege. It was split in 2 with a corridor and then the bedroom. My makeshift wooden bed with a child’s small mattress on top was in the corridor, with the ceiling sloping over the bed, I was unable to even sit on the bed for the slopping ceiling. During the night someone tried twice, very hard at the door to enter our room and in doing so put the light on in the passage which in turn put the light on in my corridor bedroom, as they must have been linked. The bedroom had what I can only describe as a camp bed, which was a pile of old springs. The double bed was next to the kitchen extractor and the noise was unbelievable. The bathroom was so out dated and in desperate need of gutting, there were even old cobwebs around the ceiling. We had asked for a room with a shower and were given a room with an old bath, which had a hand held shower head attached to the taps. The whole of the attic floor smelled so bad of fish, it clung to our clothes. The icing on the cake was the breakfast; we opted for the full English, which came with a ¼ piece of fried bread, a half piece of black pudding and an uncooked sausage.
The standards in this establishment I would of expected from a very, very cheap B&B in somewhere like Blackpool. If you are used to high or even nice standards then you definitely need to avoid this place like the plague.
I must mention Jack the bar tender, when we complained he tried to be very understanding, in the absence of the owners and offered us a free drink at the bar and took 20% off the accommodation bill.
Oh & if the owners are reading this then take a look above your bar, right above the coffee machine and coffee cups, there must be about 20 years of cobwebs and dust up there.

Room Tip: Avoid this place all together, there are far nicer places to stay in Whitby

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
