Had a brief over night stay at Whitby. Was slightly disappointed when we arrived at our room. Was up a very steep staircase. Whilst the room had charm I did not feel that it was worth £120 a night. Room was clean and beds comfy. Bathroom had no proper shower just an attachment to taps. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location was good - central to Whitby. Car park was close by - £6.50 for 24hrs

Room Tip: I picked the Helga Maria but it did not look entirely like on the website. Room was quiet at night t...

Upon arrival there is a warm welcome awaiting! We stayed in the Mary Ann Hepworth which is at the top of the building so as the heatwave had arrived it was fairly uncomfortable. That room is shabby and requires refurbishment and cleaning! As does the whole building. I noticed some not nice looking marks on the back of the bathroom door and that led me to closely inspect it and there was a build up of black dust on the panelling. i wiped my finger along one of the ledges and clearly it hasn't been touched for a long time! There was also what looked liked a blob of blood on the bathroom floor and someones long black hair!!! Mary Ann Hepworth has a bath only and it was not cleaned in the morning and there was nothing for me to clean it with? I clean my own every use???? The grouting was badly stained in places especially over the tiled edge where you have to get in and out! Sorry its just not up to scratch! I also thought I could smell sewage in the outside passageway!!!!!!! On the positive side there was a nice cooked breakfast with vegetarian alternatives. We paid £105 per. Night - sorry its sadly lacking in cleanliness although not character so not worth it.

Room Tip: Well not the Mary Ann Hepworth.

I took my fiancée here for her birthday as a total surprise. I specifically chose the hotel because of its history and general appearance. While we only stayed for the one night the experience was a fantastic one. Service was great with friendly staff. The breakfast was lovely with a decent selection. Rooms were rustic with a great charm. Highly recommended.

Me and my fiancé stayed at the white horse and griffin on the 17th-18th! We were allowed to check in two hours early and were shown around and led to our room! We were also upgraded to a better room which was lovely of them! The breakfast and our meal was absolutely gorgeous! Some may say the prices of meals are a little pricey but in my opinion it was well worth every penny! Best steak ever! All the staff were very friendly and welcoming! We were also allowed to keep our suitcases their after check out! Definitely going back! Thank you for a great stay WH&G! See you again soon x

I'm not a fussy person and appreciate that this is a very old building but I have to say there is no way that the room we stayed in (Wakeful) was worth £120 pounds per night. The carpet didn't look clean, the windows definitely weren't, you could write your name on the inside of them with your finger. The woodwork was dusty and tired looking and one of the curtain poles moved each time you opened the curtains. There wasn't a proper shower in the bathroom, the toilet flush was loose, the sealant around the bath looked like a drunk had done it. All of the above I would have overlooked had the room been a bit cheaper. It was such a shame as the room was a good size, the hotel hotel is in a great place and we had great breakfasts served by friendly staff.

Set in the heart of the old town of Whitby, this very old coaching inn has had a wonderful past - up to recent times ( late 20th century ) when it fell into disrepair. It has now been tastefully refurbished, retaining many of the old features, and has had several famous guests since that refurbishment.
The rooms are small, but have everything you need. The restaurant is excellent, if a little pricey ( but busy nonethless ). It has no parking, but a public carpark is a few hundred yards away @ £6.50 for 24 hours. The bar is small - definately not a drinkers pub, and closes to non residents quite early anyway.
We had little contact with any staff, but a request to turn down loud music from an empty dining room below our room was quickly dealt with, and the breakfast waiter dealt very efficiently with a busy room.
It is very well situated for all the popular attractions in this lovely town.

Room Tip: our room was on the first floor, above the dining room and music from that area can easily be heard...

Just recently stayed at the White Horse and Griffin and had a positive experience. Beautiful building with period features, mixture of old and new styles blend well. Location excellent - well placed for easy access to all that Whitby has to offer.

Stayed in the Provider room: traditional/ rustic style and well appointed room with attractive timber panelling, fire place and good sized bathroom equipped with large shower. No view to speak of out of the window but the room didn't feel any worse for it. Everything was clean and tidy. Plenty of storage for clothes etc. Staff took suitcase to room and were polite.

The room is situated above the breakfast room - which we discovered accommodated what appeared to be a private party at around tea time to early evening - the thud from music noise below was a distraction when we came back from a days sightseeing but thankfully we went out for the evening and it was all quiet on return.

Found the restaurant pleasant but over priced for our budget - I guess these things are purely down to personal perception and experience. Food was ok but not the quality I was expecting for the price.

Note to staff: what would help the main room is consideration for ladies getting ready with access to a mirror/ plug socket - mirror by bathroom door to high to be useful. Towel rail in bathroom would also be helpful. A pack of tourism information/ leaflets would be helpful within the room or in a table somewhere by the magazines etc - appreciate there is a notice board on ground floor but a bit weak on info.

Room Tip: Provider Room is suited to those who like a more rustic and traditional style décor. Not a room for...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The White Horse & Griffin is an almost 450 year old Coaching Inn, the first built in Whitby to serve the route to London. Operating these days as a Restaurant with Rooms it is situated on an unspoilt cobbled shambles near the base of Whitby's famous 199 Abbey Steps. The building is technically on 3 floors but is actually on 7 different levels. It boasts 10 unique and quirky bedrooms full of history and character. The walls are bumpy, the stairs are narrow and the ceilings are low. The Bistro/ Restaurant is cosy and heated by an open fire. The food is outstanding with the signature dishes (such as the Seafood Meze for 2 & the Fillet Sharing Platter) saying much about the place - great quality, great quantity, designed for sharing and, as with much in life, you get what you are prepared to pay for. The WH&G is best suited to couples and groups who want to get away, eat great food, drink good wine, meet new people, join in with the atmosphere and then retire to a hand-made bed with a hand stuffed mattress to regroup before a chef-cooked breakfast. As well as a comprehensive English Breakfast choices in the morning also include Fortune's Kippers, Smoked Haddock, Kedgeree, Scrambles, Omlettes, Fresh Fruits and Honeyed Porridge. A major benefit is that the heart of unspoiled North Yorkshire and its Coast is outside the front door in either walking or steam train distance. ... more   less
