“Absolute [--]”

Myself and a few companions stayed in this house over 4 nights in early July as just a get-away. Prior to the trip we expected it to be, as it is in the pictures, a traditional, well kept, well furnished little residence, and it was, both traditional and little.
When we arrived and had a look around our new dwelling our initial thoughts were that we had been lied to and robbed. I'll admit the place is in a decent location as the beach and the abbey are merely a stones throw away. However, from the outset of entering the premises, at the sight of dirty, faded and broken decking, we had realised that we had not got what we bargained for! But maybe this was a one off, surely this poor effort of maintaining a 'garden' of possibly three square feet could not be a fair representation of the properties overall state. It wasn't. The inside of the house was considerably worse given the fact that people have to live in it as apposed to the area outside.
Now then, lets begin with the kitchen. Dirty work surfaces, broken cupboard doors, windows bolted shut with dead insects left rotting perched on the sill (as throughout the house), one small fan to ventilate the room whilst cooking, disgustingly grimy and greasy oven/hob, dirty refrigerator with stains that could only suggest someone had smeared a used tampon around parts of the interior and also there was no can opener.
On to the lounge. A dark room with sticky leather sofas, decorated in filthy cushions under which we found a bone (which is quite odd as there are no dogs allowed in the cottage). An authentic wooden table complete with 8 leather bound (fancy I know), broken chairs and an inch thick layer of dust. The only TV throughout the entire house, possibly 20 years old as it had no scart socket (in case you wanted to bring a PS3/ XBOX as Whitby is not the most exciting place in the world). A vacuum cleaner named Henry was kept in this room, poor Henry couldn't provide enough suction to satisfy anyone's needs; and if he did manage to take it in (the dirt), he'd just spit it back out again, that's if his nozzle didn't fall off whenever it needed to get bigger.
First floor. If you make it upstairs without being knocked unconscious by the low door frame (I'm 5"9), you will see 3 bedrooms; simple, small, dirty, windows again bolted down so the rooms get quite stuffy and warm. Bathroom; again dirty, broken sink plugs, tiny shower and no lock on the door which obviously causes awkwardness with privacy.
Second (top) floor. Twin bedroom + en suite, bedroom didn't appear too bad however in the en suite, you have to sit down to use the toilet as the slanted ceiling prevents you from standing and the bath tap is broken and constantly running, causing annoyance and mold to fester on the tap and the in bath itself.
Other cons throughout the house include;
-Ants,
-Dead insects,
-Thick dust/dirt,
-No phone signal,
-No WiFi,
-No washing machine,
-Terrible dishwasher,
-Old fashioned furniture.
Pros;
-Alcohol
-Babestation
Also remember to be careful and not damage anything as a single dirty bed sheet could cost you your £152 security deposit and a nasty 2 month late e-mail from the landlady full of lies!!
Overall I don't believe the property was that nice so don't let the faded 4 star plaque on the front of the house fool you!!

“Says 'equipped to a v. high standard' - in reality, merely basic, functional and not particularly clean!”

The location of the cottage was great, which was its saving grace. It is described as 'equipped to a very high standard', but I guess my standards must be different as I found the cottage shabby, grubby and very, very basic. There was nothing really wrong with it that some better furniture, a thorough clean and a weekend of basic DIY couldn't have sorted out. Peeling paintwork and second-hand furniture is not, in my opinion, evidence of a very high standard, neither is a perpetually dripping bath tap - judging by the stains on the enamel it had obviously been doing this for a while. The fridge quite clearly hadn't been cleaned since the last guests, the net curtains were grubby and half the lightbulbs were missing. And would it really have been too much trouble to run the vacuum around before our arrival? I'm a very laid-back person and I love Whitby far too much to say that Old Kipper Cottage spoiled our holiday, but for the money we paid it was definitely a disappointment and I certainly couldn't recommend it to a friend in its current state.

“Disappointing - not well maintained at all!”

This is an old cottage in the old part of Whitby, so we would accept that it would be rustic inside. However, the ground floor of the property was in a poor state of repair and cleanliness. The furniture was dirty - I wouldn't like to say what was under the seat cushions on the sofas, but suffice to say they had not been cleaned in a while. A plastic dining table cover was covered with dirt and old food - we threw it off in the end. Cutlery and plates were dirty and only 2 mugs were without chips in the rims. One of the cupboard doors was broken and could have fallen off. A simple repair was all that was needed!

Other issues were light bulbs not working - in particular the one on the stairs, which was a danger because the stairs were steep and dark. Also, the shower unit was not as clean as it could have been and it leaked into the kitchen below.

The bedrooms and bathroom were fine and the owners had gone to the trouble of supplying towels and soaps in each room, which doesn't seem to fit with the poor conditions on the ground floor! The beds were comfortable (thank goodness) and the bedding was pristine.

The 'garden' outside is a back yard, complete with overflowing bin and the usual crop of flies.....no instructions on when the bin men were due and what to do with the bin. Not a pleasant place to sit out!

It was a shame because this property could be improved vastly with relatively little effort. We should have heeded the other review on this cottage before booking!
