“Romantic break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

I bought this as a gift for my husbands birthday and we weren't disappointed. The hotel was very quiet apart from a Christmas party which looked like fun. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Chris Haddock and his team prepared an delicious meal, the risotto was especially amazing!! Thank you all for making our stay so good. We hope to return in the summer with my mum.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a sea view.

Parts of this hotel have a shabby chic feel but the room we stayed in was large and comfortable. A proper shower I the bathroom would have made all the difference to our comfort. The food was excellent and service very good. It was a pleasant break and we would stay there again, especially if we got such a good deal as we did.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a proper shower

The staff couldn't do enough for us, the room was very cosy! Perfect location for Whitby, Scarborough and robin hoods bay. I bought the voucher though buy a gift, and had never stayed at a hall before would do both again! Would visit again and recommend to all my friends and family.

Good room, good bar food, good wine and friendly and helpful staff - we really enjoyed our brief stay. As a place to stay with easy access to Whitby this meats all the requirements (though watch out when you leave the car park as it's a tight squeeze!).

First hand reception gave us a lukewarm greeting! As the time progressed became friendly! Bedroom (recommend a garden room) was clean and fittings as would expect.
Breakfast part self serve and waiter service was good and to suit all palettes. Parking ok and adequate. Dinner was disappointing. Although we had aperitifs and drinks in the bar before dinner we encountered large number of dinner only parties and at times seating was cramped. Our dinner order taken and quickly to our table in the smaller dining room. Our pre starter arrived very quickly and only minutes after finishing our starters arrived. We felt that we were on a conveyor belt and minutes later after finishing our main dish arrived. We asked for time between courses but told we couldn't wait and a maximum of 5 minutes were permitted! My partner's vegetables were not cooked - my cod dish had new potatoes smothered over dish and couldn't see what my dish comprised of! Very over facing. Another couple felt the same & complained to management. As we had complained the previous evening about my monkfish being submerged in sauce with soggy fat chips felt we couldn't complain again. I gave constructive comments that all potatoes were served in a separate dish! Limited vegetarian options so need to be constructive about your palettes beforehand. We felt the hotel gave preference to outside diners and not enough care and attention to residents thus making our stay an endurance to them.

Room Tip: Choose a garden room - advise booking dinner time beforehand as COULD conflict with outside diners!

Had yet another wonderfully relaxing meal at Dunsley and booked for a family birthday celebration in a couple of weeks time. Took a while for staff to hear the bell on the bar, they had just changed it for a Christmas bell which sounded different, and they hadn't heard it in the kitchen over the general noise. The original bell was returned next to it before we left LOL Usual superb meal, with excellent service, I had soup and asked for an extra bread roll, I was brought a white roll and a tiny brown "loaf", and more butter. The blazing open fire was regularly topped up, keeping us cosy and warm, a very relaxing end to a busy day!

Having stayed in the cottage attached to this hotel in the summer, and having our evening meal there one evening, we we shown around the hotel by the friendly receptionist, and decided room 3 was our room of choice. I booked over the phone for a DBB stay, and the hotel did not disappoint. The hotel is small and intimate (only 26 rooms I think), the reception area is small, but check in was a breeze, we were shown to our room (no lift, so tell the hotel if you need ground floor accommodation). Room 3 is large, dual aspect (sea and country view), large 4 poster bed, adequate bathroom (though there was a hand held shower rather than a full shower, which proved a challenge as there was no wall bracket to put it on). Plenty of toiletries/milk/tea/hot chocolate/water etc in our room). we had some special requests of the hotel, which they were more than helpful with, in fact all the staff we came into contact with were professional, smiling and helpful, couldn't have asked for more from them.

I spent a couple of hours in the lounge, which was cosy and warm, and in the evening we took ourselves to the hotel bar, bar prices are in line with other hotels, and the wines on offer were good choices. As we are not big drinkers and we were staying over 2 nights, the bar staff were more than happy to keep our wine in the fridge to the following night. The bar serve you a plate of goodies (olives/candied nuts, crab and shrimp), with their compliments (you get this in the restaurant, if you don't go to the bar), and when we had ordered, we were taken into the restaurant to eat. There are two restaurants, and which they use depends on the number of guests staying. We were in a wood panelled room, which was atmospheric and a nice ambiance. The hotel chef has a great menu, with interesting modern twists and flavours in the courses. First night I had pear with cheese, goose and lemon dessert. There were also wonderful home made breads and amuse bouche which were nice and a elderflower granita, which also went down well. This hotel should promote the restaurant more, it really was worth the £35 per head for 3 courses. We said we hadn't had a better meal in a restaurant anywhere! However, on the second night, the menu did not change, so it was a matter of choosing something else from the 7 or so choices for each course.

A good nights sleep and on to breakfast. Breakfast is a mix of self service fruit salad/cereals, etc., and a list of hot breakfast dishes to chose from. I was disappointed with my cooked full English. Bacon very, very fatty, swimming in oil and had obviously been sitting on the hotplate as the beans were dry. My husband scored better with the porridge which he said was great. Next day I had local Whitby kippers, which were much better. Breakfast is served until 0945, so no lie ins on a sunday!

Check out was a breeze, couldn't have had a better stay, thanks to the lovely staff, and great restaurant.

Room Tip: Pay more for a room with a view - both room 1 (ground floor) and room 3 above it on the first floor...
