AWFUL EXPERIENCE. My daughter and I made the mistake of accidentally using one of the Restaurant's tables that were outside in the market square. On the adjacent side to the square is the Shambles pub where we bought our drinks and we came outside along with other members of the public, presuming that the table and chairs were theirs too. My daughter and I proceeded to sit and enjoy our drinks (at the uncleared table) for about 20 minutes trying to decide what we would like for supper. A waitress approached us and grunted something to us and demanded to know where we had purchased our drinks from. I was puzzled and answered the question and when she bluntly said "You can't sit 'ere" I asked her why. "Coz it says so" and I apologised and asked her where the signage was. She hurriedly cleared the table from all the plates and glasses and pointed to the newly revealed sticker that was sellotaped to the table top! Fat lot of good this sticker is when covered in glasses and plates! The waitress returned to the Restaurant and we were quickly finishing our drinks off when out comes Arnie, puffing his chest out, no eye contact, talking to the shop window opposite whilst telling us quite rudely "You can't sit here you need to move". I asked him for a menu and he said "No". The majority of the tables were occupied therefore there was no doubt in my mind that we had an audience. I asked him why we couldn't have a Menu and he said "Coz you have bought your drinks from elsewhere". What a horrible, inpolite and downright nasty way to address two people who had made a genuine mistate. I am convinced that if my husband and son had been with us Arnie would not have been so aggressive. Pompous bully. Clearly Arnie and his staff have all attended the same school of Excellent Customer Service and no doubt they have won numerous awards for delivering an outstanding first class service (NOT). We actually live in Whitby and we are not tourists and I will be sharing my horrendous experience with my friends and family. I am a professional lady working at Managerial level and if any of my Team spoke to our clients in this fashion they would be subjected to an intense performance improvement plan. I will be contacting Arnie and his staff to attempt to encourage them to use a training agency who will show them how soft skills, empathy and a smile wins every time. Little does Arnie know this but we actually ate at the Restaurant last winter (locals keep these places in business during the harder months) - the food was less than average and we were not impressed. My daughter and I thought that we would give it another chance in summer. TO SUM IT UP - BAD MANNERS, BAD FOOD, THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EXPERIENCED - WE WILL NOT BE BACK!!!
