“Bloody brilliant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2013

What ever they do - they do it well. The food was skilfully cooked and presented. The host, Sue, made us feel special. And the little touches, like decor and napkins, helped produce an evening that felt like a treat and not a mundane night out. We have lived in this area for 20 years, and applaud the fact that such brilliant surprises turn up such as this. We ambled out of what was an old pub and walked into a full moon. Very happy and content. Thank god for people who work so hard to be creative and give others such pleasure and an experience. Simon the Stand UP Paddler from close by.

“Seek, Eat, Smile”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2013

How can a small village in North Yorkshire with a population so low it is listed generally as "under 1,000" boast such an extraordinary restaurant that could hold its own amongst the London culinary elites? Experience in the field certainly helps--not the fields of sheep and cows that you navigate through to find this place--I mean the field of culinary expertise through working at respected London majors like The Ivy (Jason) and O'dettes (Sue). The proprietors left London with all their valuable gastro-knowledge to brashly challenge the North Yorkshire dining scene of chippys, curries and parmo nights. What a bold challenge, and we are so grateful.

This is not a pub, so you won't find an ale bar to belly up against. This is a reservations-only, limited-seating venue decorated with an eclectic mix of contemporary and rustic art and furnishings. You will dine upon converted sewing tables in one of two quaint rooms lit by Philipe Stark fixtures amidst other contemporary art and oddities that create an atmosphere neither city nor country yet decidedly current--like Johnny Cash singing Nine Inch Nails.

The menu is limited to around 3 selections in each category, but the choices are all delicious. We loved the seared diver scallops starter, and the perfectly broiled and crisped sea bass entree. Other favorites include the bruschetta with marinated mushrooms, and the fillet mignon. The latter was tender, succulent and perfectly cooked--something I have not come to expect in England (I am a transplanted New Yorker). Finally, the cheese selection is a generous, local and tangy conclusion to go with the selection of "stickies" like the Pedro Ximenez sherry. The only complaint would be the limited wine selection, but there is at least one relevant selection for each course served. Enjoy.

“A gem of a restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2013

We are regulars here, dining under the care and skill of Jason and Sue and now consider ourselves as 'friends of the family' rather than customers. The food at The Fox is always simple, fresh and cooked 'just so', especially the fish. Every course is delicious. The menu changes every week depending on what Jason has sourced so we never become bored. The wine list is short but has quality throughout and is fairly priced.

A gem of a restaurant, we would like to keep the secret of this special place to ourselves but instead urge you to put yourselves into the skilled hands of Jason and Sue then relax into a memorable evening. You will not be disappointed.

“Rude”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2013

What can I say, we didn't even make it through the door and nor would we choose to. As we did not have the phone number for the Fox and Hounds we decided to drive there to make an enquiry. When we got there we were greeted by a woman who was so rude we were all gobsmacked to say the least. We asked how we would go about eating there and the woman rolled her eyes at us and said we needed to book which we assumed was the case. When we asked for the phone number she said she didn't have a pen and rolled her eyes again! Anyone would think we were putting her out wanting to spend our money there. With an attitude like that I'm surprised they have any custom. Dreadful.

“Simply the best food and welcome in the area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2013

I haven't reviewed the Fox and Hounds before, although I've been fortunate enough to eat there many times now, but on reading the comment from someone told their dietry needs couldn't be met I had to say something! I'm a vegetarian and in spite of there being no mention of the usually ubiquitous single veggie option on the menu I eat better vegetarian food here than anywhere I've ever been. Such careful thought has been put into all the dishes that Jason cooks that elements of each can be put together to create beautiful, delicious and balanced vegetarian meals, and it has never seemed to be any trouble at all for Jason and Sue who put so much effort into making everything so very special. The atmosphere, welcome and quality of the food and wine has ensured that the Fox and Hounds has become for my partner and I the place we always choose to celebrate our special occasions.
