They've been on the same site for over 140 years and make amazing kippers and a few other bits of smoked fish like haddock and salmon, the taste is fantastic, a trip to whitby wouldn't be complete without a visit to fortunes.

Fortune's has been in the same shop on Henrietta Street for over 100 years. Don't know what Googling @Ormes100 did, but if it suggests the shop used to be on Church Street - it's wrong!

The kippers are as good as ever, and the shopkeeper is as polite as any other if you use a bit of common courtesy to him in return. Been visiting Fortune's (in the same shop!!) since I was a kid - so that makes it over 40 years now - and a trip to Whitby just wouldn't be complete without a nice pair of kippers to come home with.

Proper kippers, proper craftsmen. This place is the "real" Whitby - forget about glass ducks and dubious Bram Stoker "legends". Pay them a visit and for goodness' sake don't complain about the smell - it's a shop full of smoky fish, after all.

I tried searching for Fortune's on Church Street but only got this result, which is for the smokehouse AND shop up on Henrietta Street (near the 199 steps to the abbey). Anyway, a bit of Googling and it seems there was a threat to move the shop following a landslide last year, which I guess has now actually happened. It's definitely the same people as the blonde girl on Furtune's website served us - and very pleasant she was, too.

Anyway, all that aside, it's well worth a visit for possibly the best kippers you've ever tasted. And such excellent value, too.

If you don't like fish, they also do a mean smoked bacon barm and a few other things, too.

(PS - do not confuse these kippers with the processed boil-in-the-bag rubbish in the supermarkets; they're poles apart!)

Bought a pair of kippers. Had them for breakfast. They were succulent with a delicious taste.

As a bonus I also got some nice photosof the smoke room being set up.

Visit and take some tasty fish home with you.

Great kippers, absolutely delicious and a good price. A meal in itself, great with brown bread and butter. Just a shame they no longer post them.
