We had a very good time on this trip on a lovely old vessel. The captain was very funny and had plenty of anecdotes to amuse us all with as well as the usual tour information. He took us all out of the harbour and out to sea, but we had to do a U-turn pretty quickly as the wind was higher than expected. This made for a hilariously bumpy brief ride on the sea waves and my husband and I, along with some kids and their family, found it very funny indeed as it was like a rollercoaster ride! We were brought back safe and sound to go round the river instead, which was a shame as the sea was such good fun, but we could understand the need for the health and safety call!
It was a lovely run up and down the river and going under the swing bridge and waving at everyone were particular highlights.
It is a lovely old vessel and we had a great time. Highly recommended.

The best £3 spent in Whitby!

As it was a really wet day when we saw this trip, so we decided to return the next morning. We did!

It was a blowy but beautifully sunny April morning when we boarded The Mary Ann Hepworth. Barry, at the helm, ensured we were all aboard and safely ensconced before setting off. His lighthearted commentary and banter with the passengers made us all feel at ease. As we headed out to sea from the harbour mouth we met the wind and sea head on. It did get a bit choppy, so Barry chose to head back in and took us up the river instead.

During the exhilarating encounter with the North Sea we became very aware of just what Barry and his fellow lifeboatmen may have endured in this open cockpit, saver of lives (271?). At no time did we feel unsafe, but just inexperienced! Hats of to the RNLI and its crews!

If in Whitby - just do it!

Hopped on this boat on impulse after just missing it on the trip before. For £3 each there's not much better value activity in the whole of Whitby. Really interesting piece of history, and more that just a bit exciting when the sea is a bit rough, which it was! Great friendly skipper who helpfully pointed out the seals / porpoises along the way.

Having read the other reviews on this lifeboat trip, I can only assume we hit a bad day for it (Wed 18th). My wife and I got on board on impulse, just after arriving in Whitby for the day, and at that stage were unaware of the conditions out to sea.
It was OK for the first few minutes whilst we were still in the harbour, and the commentary was interesting and amusing. Then we were in the bay. Here the waves were high, my wife was clinging on for dear life as the railings around the deck looked unlikely to stop anyone from falling overboard, and we were covered in spray more than once. Also the commentary virtually stopped, being restricted to such things as "Here's a big wave coming", "We're going out to that buoy" and "We're coming back in now". Presumably the skipper was concentrating on keeping us afloat?
This was not fun, and we were very glad indeed when it was over. In my opinion the boat should not have gone out in such conditions, or at least there should have been some kind of warning beforehand about the height of the waves. Oh, and negotiating the awkward set of movable steps to get from the land to the boat and back - without any assistance - was not easy.
I would suggest that before deciding to go on this trip you walk further on and have a look at the sea first.
