We arrived early afternoon, managed to park in the Wheeldale carpark and entered the hotel. We waited to check-in and were seen by (who we assume) was the owner. I gave my name, she looked on the pc and with a sigh, muttered "oh, you've already paid" which felt like we were already putting her out for being there.
We entered the room and upon first glance it was nice and spacious. The bed was comfy and we had Sky tv. However, we had booked that particular room for the balcony, so we can sit outdoors and enjoy the view while having a beer.....instead, there was a 6ft high bamboo fence across the entire patio, there was loud drilling noises coming from below and everywhere had a thick coating of dust. We went back into the room and closed the door so we could hear the tv. We went to lie back on the bed and promptly realised that unless you lay flat on your back and looked at the ceiling, you couldnt sit upright and see the tv as instead of a headboard, it was an enclosed wardrobe surrounding the pillows which was so impractical as you had to duck and use neck muscles to lay your head!! There was no room info, wi-fi pass, guest info.
The bathroom mirror was ridiculously high - i'm 6ft and had to stand on tip-toes to see my ugly mug. I wrote the words 'clean me' on both the patio door and the unit in the bathroom which were both still there when we left 48 hours later!!
Both mornings we went down for breakfast and were served quickly. The food was nice and set us up for the day and the elderly lady was pleasant.
My only other gripe is the lack of acknowledgement from the owners. We only knew who they were by the picture by reception wall and realised they had walked past us several times. I actually spoke to their young son more than them and a friendly hello would have been nice seeing as we just spent £180 for 2 nights in May.

Sorry but I wouldn't recommend our room at all.

I am sorry that we were undertaking major alterations during your stay at the Wheeldale. We have now taken out the wardrobe from over the bed and finished all building work. The balcony has been changed on our website to small outside sitting area looking onto back yard.I just wish you could have told me and we could possibly have moved you to a different room.
It is not my Intention to appear as ignorant.
Thankyou for your comments

My "old" shoolfriend and I think this B&B is first class. We were here for a long weekend to attend the 60s music festival. The Wheeldale is in an excellent location, overlooking the sea on the West Cliff. It is a bit of a hike into town (especially coming back up!), but was ideally placed for the Pavillion where the festival was taking place. There is a lovely walk along the cliff top towards Sandsend; very bracing with the wind and rain during our stay, but never mind.
The full English breakfast is delicious and absolutely huge - there are lighter options, but we couldn't resist when we'd read other reviews about how good the food was.
The owners and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and had Sky TV. There is a large communal lounge overlooking the sea with a fridge full of wines and beers; there is Sky TV, Internet access, plenty of DVDs, books and soft drinks. Tea and coffee were also avaiable although they are supplied in the rooms. The rooms also have a WiFi hotspot.
We would recommend this B&B to anyone and hope to return next year for the 60s music festival weekend.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 1, which is described as "compact". It is quite small, hence the wardrob...

We have just returned from our second visit to the Wheeldale - each time a week's stay. We enjoyed the holiday last time, and it was even better this time. We were given a warm welcome from Jane who was on "office duty" and shown to room 4 which was light, airy, comfortable, clean and a good size. The bathroom was large, with a lovely power shower (and this from someone who really prefers a bath!) Room 4 has duel aspect, and a sea view.
Breakfasts were very good, and guests' preferences catered for. We found Peter, Rebecca and all staff to be most obliging and helpful.
We would be more than happy to return again.

We stayed here for 5 days in June in room 3, great sea views from bay window.
Breakfast basic & overcooked, hospitality tray very basic 2 biscuits for 1st night only !
Both owners completely ignored us
Lacking customer care, will not be back

Room Tip: room 3 at front, bay window fantastic sea view

I have been unwell so it was a really welcome break for my husband and I to come to Whitby. As your other reviews say this is a highly recommended hotel, very clean,(Room 7) breakfasts were filling and plenty of choice. The ladies who served breakfast were efficient and friendly but oh dear what did we do to the lady of the house who completely ignored us, showing us our room she was very cold, we thought she might have had a busy day and thought no more of it, at the end of the holiday even when I had paid and we were leaving to go home I said goodby to her at the front door she walked right past me, I thought it was because she was busy emptying the car of groceries and said to my husband but no, she had passed him too without a word then she went over to a couple sitting on the wall and laughed and chatted away while we got into the car to leave. What was it, surely not because we were scottish? It was so disappointing, sorry Wheeldale, we will not be back.

Highly recommend this hotel where we have just had a 2 night stay, Very clean and comfortable. Breakfast excellent and very filling - Veggie sausages Linda McCartney with eggs, toast, beans and tomato's. Good value for money and friendly welcome from staff. Free and fast Wifi connection.. Will definitely stay again - Noticed in the lounge a Certificate from Trip Advisor awarded for consistently meeting standards and receiving great reviews - Well deserved... Thank You

Room Tip: Room 2 on the side is without a view, but if that is not of importance, just book it and ask them to...

We stayed for 6 nights in the suite (Room no 6) We had a bedroom overlooking the cricket pitch and upstairs a sitting room with views of the sea. There was both a shower and a bathroom plus a separate loo. A large TV upstairs with SKY and another smaller one in the bedroom. It was spotlessly clean and had comfortable chairs which is quite rare, we've found. It was so pleasant to be able to return and relax in our own space when we got tired.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone -the only minus for us were the stairs but then we are in our seventies!
We hope to return next year.
Congratulations to the owners for creating something really special
Gerry and Delphine
