“Lovely staff and pleasant atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2009

Stayed at the Resolution Hotel for a couple of days midweek with my partner, just for a relaxing break away, and we were both really happy with the experience. The room was fairly basic but clean, spacious and tastefully decorated, with a nice view looking out towards the abbey.
There is a pub on the ground floor of the hotel which has karaoke and sometimes live music on. Nice pleasant atmosphere, really friendly staff and decent selection of drinks. The food was also delicious - we had a meal one evening with lovely home-cooked chips and cajun chicken. Breakfast was included in the price with full cooked English menu and the chef really couldn't have been any more friendly and courteous.
Great location, being a 5/10 minute walk from the pier and with plenty of shops, restraunts and pubs nearby although it is quite a steep walk if you are coming from the train station.
In terms of customer service this is one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Really made our break a pleasurable experience and would totally recommend this hotel to anyone.

Stayed at the Resolution in Sept 2008 with 25 others in a large party for a Wedding. The Resolution is downstairs a public bar with a dining area. Though the abiltiy to socialise is still possible, and also to have a good time. The food is good and freshly prepared. The staff are polite, helpful and can't do enough for you just don't get in the way when they've been out on the town late at night. They all come back to drink here late into the night. There are plenty of locals who can give you good information where and when to park, where to go and visit and the best pubs to frequent.
Paula and Jinny are excellent members of staff and couldn't do enough for me, my family and guests. Thankyou.

The rooms, yes are abit tired but are clean, tidy and well serviced. We had a large room with also a sofa bed for the children and still had plenty of room to move around in and the bathroom was huge.

All in all we had a great time and wished we could have gone and done it all again this weekend. Thanks Richard, Katrina, Paula and Jinny but also thanks to the Night Porter too who makes a fantastic Scrambled egg on toast.

  • Liked — The Whole Weekend went well and it was all down to good service, food & Hospitality
  • Disliked — It was time to go home

We recently stayed here for a wedding that was held at the hotel. We found that the hotel was fine, not as luxurious as has been described as the room's decor was a bit tired and the toilet roll holder fell off the bathroom wall while we were there. The room had all the basic amenities - en suite, TV, wardrobe etc, but did not have a hairdrier which would have been appreciated.

Upon our arrival the window was open and about 15 flies were buzzing around the room which was a pain! We couldn't get them to leave unfortunately - I guess this is out of the hands of the staff, but it would have perhaps been better to leave the window closed. There is a great view of the harbour and the abbey from the room's window.

Staff were friendly although looked a bit rushed - the wedding reception was wonderful with fantastic food and wine. The English Breakfast was delicious!

Only complaint about Whitby is the lack of parking spaces - we drove around for about 30 minutes before luckily spotting one in a back alley. Be warned!

We spent a couple of nights at this hotel and were dissapointed given that it had good reviews on this sight.
The bedroom was small but clean. The bedroom sash window would only open about an inch, which was uncomfortable when sunny. Sheets were ok but the duvet cover and pillow slips were tired and worn, towels were thin - some frayed ,some stained. We were unable to use the room safe as management had no key for it. Downstairs the dining room and entrance carpets need repair at joins and gripper bars.
The breakfast was fine but we would have prefered a tea pot on our table instead of pump flaskes of hot water on a table several yards away.
We ate in the restaurant on one night only. My husband's steak, ordered medium rare arrived very well done. The home made steak and ale pie was a gluttonous mess with a few pieces of dry meat in it - no hint of ale at all. The chips were tough and had probably been kept hot too long.

There did appear to be staff problems with no cover when staff called in sick or simply turned up very late. The hotel is not worth the charge of £80 per night . We have had far better for less.

Had an absolutely brilliant weekend here, staff very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them even when very busy. The food is home cooked and the portions gigantic - never had room for dessert! Shame. Best Brekkie I've had in a hotel for quite some time.
Based centrally you can easily walk to anywhere in town within 5mins, though the hotel has no parking of it's own you can easily get street parking within 5mins and staff will happily give you directions.
My only groan is that the weekend went far too quickly and I shall definately plan for a long weekend next time.

The Resolution Hotel, what can I say. Warm, friendly with enthusiastic staff and great value for money!

As i have always worked in hotels and restaurants I know what the standards should be and I am suprised to hear one of the above reviews recommend The George Hotel. As a regular visitor to Whitby, we have stayed at the George, we found it loud and unclean with total gormless staff. I should note that unless the person has ever been put through the dire accomodation at The George they should not advise unsuspecting people to do so.

Any way back to point, on arriving at the Resolution we were welcomed by a fantastic young lady, who ran through everything from parking to locking the hotel door. After looking through an array of fantastic comments in the visitors book at reception, we dropped off our bags and headed straight for the bar. On arriving we were greated by the same young lady and we were quickly served with a smile. I must admit the menu doesn't match the grand design of the building, but it is fantastic value for money and for £10 we were greated with two huge home made fresh meals that were to die for. I must add also that if you were to chose any night to dine at The Resolution it would have to be Saturday. Two fresh steaks, with an array of vegetables and a bottle of rather nice wine for around £25.

Other restaurants nearby to recommend are The Moon and Sixpence, and Moutreys, slightly more expensive, but definately worth the extra few pounds.

To finish I would definately like to recommend the Resolution Hotel to people of all ages as there is something for everyone to enjoy.

A review of an English hotel from Englishman this time. The Resolution, this is a difficult one.

Location wise the hotel is in an excellent position, on a hill(Whitby is all hills) a couple of minutes walk from the harbour and its associated hustle and bustle.

There are literally hundreds of pubs, and eateries ranging from tea rooms, to cafes and top restaurants. There is loads to do even in winter, from ghosts walks (Whitby is the home of Dracula, the book was written there) to Captain Cook museums amongst others. There are Captain Cook replica boat trips and the North Yorks Moors Steam Railway runs from Whitby. It is a lively place, you won't be bored exploring the narrow cobbled streets.

The Resolution itself has two main bars and a restaurant, the bars are spacous each having a pool table and room to move. Drinks are reasonably priced. Apparently at the time of writing the hotel has been very recently taken over this has had a profound effect on the food menus. The menu on the Resolution web site looks excellent, as does the menu just outside the establishment, forget those, currently the menu is more beefburger and chips than the type of food found in an established restaurant. However the breakfast is substanital and well presented, though the view of many guests is that the bacon is over-cooked!

I must, at this point, draw attention to the cost of many of the pubs and restaurants in Whitby. Fish and chips in 'Trenchers' is about £12.00. The 'Grill' on Skinner Street will relieve you of £17+ for a steak with most pubs charging towards £3.00 for a pint of lager. This, to my mind is expensive. Undoubtedly the best place we found to eat is the restaurant at 'The George,' excellent food and much cheaper! 16oz steaks too!! Mings Palace next to the George also does superb Chinese food, if a little pricey.

I digress, and to continue with the review of the Resolution. The staff are friendly and do their best to make people feel welcome, upon reporting a fault with the heater, a young man arrived and fixed the problem.

The main downside with this hotel are the rooms. Apparently (apart from the Honeymoon Suite) they are all of similar size. The main part of the bedroom we had was approximately twelve feet by eight feet, into that was packed an occassional table, a huge desk, a large wardrobe, a chair, two bedside cabinets and the bed! Whoever decided upon the layout of the room and its furniture is clearly extremely fit, as my wife and I found it comparable to taking part in the Krypton Factor obstacle race moving from the partial harbour view window to the en suite!! To be fair the bathroom, which was almost as large as the rest of the room was very good, clean and well maintained with an excellent shower. As it ought to be for £75 per night!

In conclusion, we had a great time in Whitby, I recommend the pub The Granby, just up the road from the Resolution, to drink in. With Halloween approaching it was the Goth Festival in Whitby and the whole town was jumping and alive with atmosphere.

I could not recommend the Resolution to stay in because of the size of the rooms, but would however suggest the George which is considerably cheaper and has excellent food.
