First of all, I must say, if you have read any negative comments about this hotel, it will be regarding the PREVIOUS owners.
Kay and David haven't had the hotel for long, however they are what makes this place special. Nothing is too much trouble and they always welcome constructive comments. We stayed in a family room, which was an attic room. It was very spacious with fabulous sea views. To get to the room, we took the lift to the third floor and a small trot up some stairs. Our little boy thought it was a real adventure. The lift is small and does run up along the inner wall of the hotel but it is as safe as any lift I've been in ( and I don't like lifts at all!!!!).
The breakfast was gorgeous with a great variety, The lounge area had a fab selection of games, jigsaws etc
All in all, this is a cracking place that is only set to improve ( after the last owners). Kay and David were soooooo friendly and made us feel likewe were friends who had come to visit.
This was our first visit but it won't be our last, Can't wait to go back!
To the reader: If you want a great location, clean, tidy and friendly place to stay, THIS IS IT!!!

Myself and my partner recently stayed at The Sandbeck and it was perfect in all ways,
the Hotel was clean, tidy and extremely well presented. The room was spacious with 2 superb views of the sea and front areas of Whitby.

The breakfast was superb, infact Kay and David are the perfect hosts, and if anyone is looking to stay in Whitby, The Sandbeck is the perfect place to stay.

Being a regular visitor to the Sandbeck over the last 5 years whenever my partner and myself booked with the previous owners Ken and Sue we always asked for a room with a sea view / bay windows and we were guaranteed to always get a bay window on the first floor with stunning views,
Aware that there were new owners, on arrival we were not impressed to be told that our credit card had been debited the minute we booked over the phone, surely it is common practice to take the money after the customer has stayed, this has always being the case wherever else we have been, we got put in an "Attic" room, although it had a sea view you had to stand up to see it , we did mention this at breakfast the next morning and we were told that the rooms with bay windows were being refurbished, this was in July, and as they were new owners these things have to be done, but the following morning after ordering bacon and eggs for breakfast and getting one rasher of bacon and one egg with a dollop of tinned tomato, we decided we would give it one last chance to see if the teething problems had been rectified.

So to be sure, this time we booked five week in advance and specifically stated a "Bay window" room, to be told this would be fine.
When we arrived the owner said " I hope you are expected", not a great welcome, once the keys were handed over we realised that this was the same "Attic room " as before, and I said that this time we had specifically asked for a bay window, the owner then came out with a list of excuses as to why we had been put in this room, first he said, "Well to be honest this has the best sea views and is a really great room", I then explained that we liked the bay windows as we could sit and look out, he then said "But they are been refurbished and if you look you will see ladders in the rooms", so after five minutes of more excuses, like saying it had a great bathroom?!?, (the shower was terrible, merely a dribble) he left promising to go check if any notes were on the system to prove we had asked for a bay window room, he never came back, but in the end there was nothing we could do as they had taken our money off the credit card five weeks ago !
On our return to the B&B later that night we had a look up at all the bay windows and there were no ladders but all had people sitting in the rooms looking out, every single one was occupied, so the refurb excuse was very poor.
I was shocked to see the breakfast room so busy the next morning as when Ken ran it there were only ever a handful of people staying, but from the experience at breakfast last time I decided I needed to be specific over my order, and I did actually get what I ordrered although the offer of more toast would have been nice.
So although things are cosmetically changing at the Sandbeck at least with Ken and Sue, judging by previous posts on here many who stayed did not like them as they had rules, no children, no takeaways in rooms etc at least you knew where you stood were not lied to, if the owner had held his hand up and said sorry we are really busy and people who are staying longer than one night get a better room we would have accepted this, but to just come out with excuse after excuse and still be charged for a better room than we got (No tariff on show at all ) is not good business.

We stayed for a couple of days during Folk week , and found the hotel to be a delightful place to stay. The owners informed us they were closing in November for a complete refit, but in the meantime , work had clearly been done and the whole place was spotless and comfortable. Our room was well equipped with thoughtful touches, like a pair of binoculars hanging in the bay window from which we could enjoy the superb views, and good quality toiletries. The hospitality was generously stocked in the same vein. Breakfast was plentiful and cheerily served. We wish the new proprietors good luck with the refit and have every intention of returning next year-for longer!
