We had heard good things about Trenchers and thought it must be good if there was a queue to get in!
Haddock & chips didn't disappoint, possibly the second best I have tasted.
Went back a second night and had the excellent lasagne & salad

I was worried as I tried to make a booking and the website stated a minimum of 7 to book, we were a group of 5. A short wait, kept informed by friendly staff and we had a lovely meal on a Sunday lunchtime. We’ll be back!

We looked forward to eating at Trenchers as a high point of our day trip to Whitby as, in the past, we'd been served superb fish and chips and expected to receive the same again.
Sadly, I have to say we were disappointed by a distinctly average meal.
We each chose haddock and chips which looked appetising but which consisted of slightly undercooked chips and fish whose batter was soggy and watery where it sat on the plate, maybe because the plates weren't hot enough?
The meal was served with a piece of lemon, a scrap of parsley and homemade tartare sauce which was ok although too creamy for me. The overriding impression was of a lack of taste, not what you expect from a British classic.
It seems to me that Trenchers fish and chips offering has been downgraded to a minor role in what is now an extensive menu and, as a result, we'll eat elsewhere when we next visit Whitby.

No visit to Whitby is complete without a visit to Trenchers. They serve super fish and chips. There is a board inside telling you exactly where the Cod and Haddock was caught. We had the Haddock which was very fresh, very white and flaky, cook to perfection. They also serve other seafood and salads. Very busy, usually a queue.
