Lovely hotel just inside the city walls, very friendly staff. We were in room 5 which was very nice, with a corridor in the room to the bathroom which was quite quirky! The breakfast was good, full English looked very nice, good service. The full vegetarian breakfast was a bit disappointing, the veggie sausage and pattie looked very pale and undercooked, but the egg, beans and mushroom were very nice, good choice of jams and cereals. The hotel and bedrooms were very clean and the bed in room 5 was very comfortable, not too hard as in some hotels. Good hospitality tray in the bedroom, choice of teas, coffee and drinking chocolate and nice biscuits.

Good location for visiting all that York has to offer, we walked everywhere, no need to use the car at all.

There were only two draw backs, one was the amount of stairs to climb, we were on the third floor and there were 40 steps every time we went up or down, so if you have any problem with climbing upstairs ask for a room lower down! Also room 5 is to the front of the house right on the main street, and could be noisy at times late at night with revellers going home!

We would definitely go back to this hotel on another trip to York, would recommend.

Room Tip: Any problems with climbing stairs ask for a room lower down, rooms to the front of the house might p...

Hi Thank you for your 5* review. We are glad you enjoyed the charm of the Lamb and lion. I have passed your comments about the vegetarian breakfast onto my kitchen team which will be rectified. We look forward to seeing you again in the not too distant future.

My parents visiting for a couple of days and we wanted to get some food so I decided on this place as I work near by and walk past it almost every day.

We went in and there was a German tourist at the bar being served by a young woman, she was being really rude to him and repeating "you need a table" over and over again (he had a table, his wife was sat there) and in the end they both just appeared to leave (they could have gone into another room perhaps?).

We got served by a tall man who had a higher opinion of himself over others. We ordered a couple of rounds of drinks (beautiful) and then decided on the food. I had a steak.

It was one of the best steaks I have ever had. I am quite picky when it comes to these sorts of dishes. 9/10 when I order the peppercorn sauce it is rubbish. Tasteless, too much cream, not enough pepper....

This was strong and full of flavour, the steak was cooked to perfection. The hand cut chips were good as well.

The only downside to this dish was that it was served on a wooden board, which made it risky to pour all the sauce over as it would have ran onto the table.

The staff are so helpful - lugging our suitcases up the stairs even though we were quite happy to do it ourselves!! For a room above a pub - I wasn't sure what to expect but it was a lovely room, clean, good size and I would definitely stay there again. Right near the York Minster which was great and a short stroll to The Shambles/Markets.

My husband and I stayed at the Inn for 5 nights over Easter and we had a great time. The location was perfect for the places/attractions we wanted to visit, the accommodation was lovely and clean, and the meals were excellent with a varied menu. The only thing which we felt could be made better was the fact that we were unable to open the bathroom window, and we thought the fitting of net curtains on the lower part of the windows of our room would make it more private as we could be seen from the garden. That said, we would definitely return to the Lamb and Lion, and will recommend it to other people when they visit the city.

Room Tip: Our room was at the rear of the Inn which was a very quiet room.

A nice small Hotel, right at the Historic city wall, next to one of the city gates, a stone's throw from the gorgeous York Cathedral. Within a short walk from the Train Station. Room was basic but cosy. On the minus side, there was a Lamb and Lions own Beer Garden right in front of the window, at the window level, so had to keep the curtains closed, on the plus side the beer garden was excellent.

We had a great experience at the Lamb and Lion Inn a couple of weeks ago, we stayed for one night, having an evening meal there and then breakfast- both were wonderful! Great evening menu, the food was just delicious! Service was very good, friendly and very helpful. We did feel slightly uncomfortable in the separate dining area where a few couples were quietly talking- it would be nice to see the place on a busy weekend night.

The room we had was charming and traditional with hints of quirky modern touches. No noise or disturbance whatsoever, we slept like babies- super comfy bed! Everything including the bathroom was clean and well presented.

Will definitely be back next time we're visiting York, thanks very much!
