arrived via chapter house street not a good 1st impression grays court waiters and kitchen staff smoking outside of court yard pile of fag ends all over court yard!
would echo comments made by a previous visitor nobody to meet and greet staff sullen and looked totally un professional stinking of cigarette smoke not nice! would agree also there seems to be no overall person managing the staff and nobody appears to be in charge eratic and slow servicehad a posh cheese on toast the bread was atale and i would say at lease 3 days old and the cheese was not melted on top and was almost inedible had some soup which at £4.50 a bowl was bettys price and certanly this cafe /tea room is not a patch on bettys but with the same pricing structure?!
waited and waited for both cheese and soup to come no apology from the staff for the delay. would i recomment this tea room no way , go to bettys and get great food with professional service for the same price.

Arrived for lunch at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon, not the peak lunch hour or so I thought. There was no one to greet & seat customers so I struggled to find a free table for one as the place was so busy. Not enough waiting staff so I eventually had to ask for a menu. Good selection on the menu & I ordered a brie & bacon sandwich with a pot of darjeeling; cup arrived without a spoon ! The waiting staff consisted mainly of what I guessed were students who didn't really seem to be taking ownership of their room/station & I didn't see anybody who seemed to be in overall charge of them. Once I had ordered there wasn't too long a wait for my sandwich, which was delicious & a very good size. Will try again on a less busy day.

I must apologise for your experience, we have had one or two issues with staffing levels and were painfully aware of shortcomings. Resolved issue of meet and greet, an additional staff member to organise seating and ensure correct service.

The kitchen is being re-ordered with additional equipment which should help. Thank you for your comments, which are fully justified, Saturdays are very busy but we will continue to work to improve and maintain the level of service our guests expect.

This is a fantastic, newly opened cafe next to the Treasurer's House at the back of York Minster. The atmosphere in this historic old house is one of charm, peace and tranquility. You can browse the newspaper, or just sink into one of the many comfy sofas, whilst enjoying a delicious (and not overly priced) coffee - probably with the scone, clotted cream and jam! The cafe can be accessed from the walls between Bootham Bar and Monkgate, or through the courtyard on Chapter House Street. It won't be a secret for long, so get there quick before everyone finds out! The lunch menu looked very tempting although we didn't have time to try that today.
