“Nice building - not much else”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2013

The Ace Hostel calls itself a 'boutique' hostel but I wouldn't list it as such. Having stayed on a top floor room of eight beds (Room 20), I couldn't sleep at all due to the heat in the room. Underwear and no sheets still left me sweating. That, plus the bathrooms were grim and horrible. It does have a sauna in the basement but your room will do the same job.

Fort Boutique on the other side of town also uses the 'boutique' tag and is much better.

Room Tip: Avoid the top floor - think those would probably be the hottest.

Its been a good 10 years since i have stayed in a hostel, but this was very impressive. The lady on reception who checked us in was very friendly. The location was great - everything walking distance (but York a very small city!) Our 4 bed dorm in the basement did resemble a prison cell but it was clean and basic reflected in the price, we were only staying one night so it was perfect - am sure there are lighter rooms on the above floors. Overall would definately recommend if you want a cheap, clean and basic room, The lounge area and bar were also great, all in all very impressed

Room Tip: don;t stay in basement if you want natural light, its quite dark down there

I have been in a few historical hostels in the North of England. The lobby, common areas and stairs of this look as impressive. However I recommend to take rooms facing the street and not the back, which are above a nightclub with loud music until 3-4 in the night. We booked a room for 2 on top and although the character and cozyness were undoubtful, we thought it was overpriced at 84 pounds considering disurbance and the average quality of services (small bathroom, minimal breakfast). I suggest the management should be more honest about the noise problem and charge less the rooms facing the back.

Room Tip: Definitely rooms not facing the back / disco area

Where to start... I didn't write a review sooner possible due to how seething I was following my stay there, I'm not sure I could've written a fair review. However, having stayed in several hostels before and since, it puts in perspective how appalling the service in this hostel really was.

I'd was travelling alone on a visit to York and booked in for 3 nights last July, feeling pretty confident of its 4 star rating. The location of the hostel and building itself are great, a big old house and only 10 minutes from the train station. Perhaps a 20 minute walk to York Minster.

The staff on arrival were surly and rude and seemed to be laughing smugly to themselves whilst I was checking in. As someone who works in customer service, the service I experienced from start to finish was quite appalling. When getting to my room, I soon realised the air-conditioning they advertise was in fact a tiny small open window in the roof. Which a pigeon kept trying to get in through. The room was very stuffy and warm with only this for ventilation and it mean the noise from nightclubs nearby was extremely loud.

The bathroom was reminiscent or a port-a-loo with about the same level of cleanliness. A sign on the door said it was checked and cleaned every 30 minutes which can't be the case at all. It reeked of urine, being a little cubicle, there's nowhere to set your stuff to shower. If you were able to get hot water in the shower, which I wasn't, it would go all over your stuff, the toilet and sink. Not to mention the overflowing ladies sanitary bin (gross).

Pointing faults out to the staff, including the lack of air-conditioning, the girl seemed bemused and unconcerned. Exceedingly rude. The leaflets the have about the hostel actually IN the hostel describe it as a 4 star air-conditioned hostel, which it is by no stretch of the imagination.

I had some trouble with the key card for the door to the dorm. Asking a guy at the desk for help he looked at me as if I were making it up and seemed annoyed that I was interrupting a discussion he was having with a colleague about his social plans. In the end I threw the head up and checked myself into a very nice B&B not 15 minutes away with friendly staff and a clean room. Even on checking out, the attitude from the staff was almost laughable it was so downright rude.

Having stayed in many hostels, mostly in Dublin and London at cheaper prices than Ace, they seem to have checked very few of the boxes that these other hostels do. Friendliness of staff, value and cleanliness. The duvets and pillows were all stained as well as the bed sheets to cover them. If this was a cheap one night stop over, you'd make do but for a 4 star hostel that really talks itself up this falls so short of the mark and for an extra 30 or so pounds you could get much better in York and with much more pleasant people.

All in all, a very unpleasant stay.

By far the most 'grand' entry for any hostel that I've ever stayed in. The lounge for the guests was very comfortable. The hostel also provided a very good and well rounded breakfast, which is a perk. I stayed in a private double room, it was clean and the shower was nice. However, the wall were quite thin, so we could hear the conversations of the people next to us, it is a hostel after all. Under the bunk bed were two cages where you could put your personal belongings and lock them up if needed, which is also nice.

The location was right in the city centre close to everything, so that was a perk as well.

We stayed here whilst doing the Way of the Roses bike ride. The room was ok but the bathroom was tiny - when the shower was on the water was almost going in the sink and toilet. The building itself is very nice but it's in a very rowdy part of York - hen do's, stag do's and drunk people everywhere. There was some loud music on nearby which went on until 3.30 in the morning, I won't be going back any time soon.

My friends and I all stayed at Ace for my stag do during March 2013. I have not stayed in hostels before so I have nothing to really compare it to but I wouldn't hesitate going back here.

The location is perfect for a night in York as its situated in between the train station and the night life, both are just a short walk.

The staff were all friendly and the building is amazing and clean. In the basement there is an amazing games room with loads of leather couches, pool table and a few classic arcades, perfect for a few drinks before hitting the bars.

The rooms you sleep in have everything you need and were clean. There are racks to store your belongings which are lockable if you take a padlock. Plenty of power points so you can charge your gizmos and gadgets. The bathroom in the dorm was not great, very small and the shower leaks all over but this was not an issue for us. There was another large bathroom on our floor which was much nicer and as it was a stag do we were in no mood for a shower the morning after.

Overall I would recommend to groups of friends, stags, hens or anyone just looking for cheap digs in a great location. I will deffo use again.
