This old building is the home of the black swan Inn. when you get in is like you are back in time, with all this nice decoration. And then comes the food... Everything is delicious! I've been there many times and I have tried almost everything. They have a superb burger but I suggest to go for the plates that you can't find them every day, like pigeon pie or liver and bacon. Moreover, the mix grill is more than perfect. During the summer period you can enjoy your beer or food in a nice open space. Their selection of beers is just what you need for accompanying your meal!

I stayed here with my fiancée for three nights at the beginning of August it's Certainly one of the best places to stay in York. The location of this pub was ideal its literally five minutes walk from the centre of York, there are two nice beer gardens at the rear of the pub there is also a huge car park here. Our room was immaculate and clean. There is such a great sense of history here, with an excellent atmosphere, then I come to what I think makes the black Swan so unique....the staff, I have never experienced such fantastic hospitality it really turned our stay in York into something very special. The breakfast in morning was HUGE oh and there was also a good selection of well kept beers - I would recommend that if your going to York stay at the Black Swan.

The Black Swan was our 1st choice in York in the 70s and 90s for its charm, 15th c antiquity, and location. But this time we were depressed to find it poorly maintained and, frankly, dirty. It is still a beautiful black-n-white half-timber pub with rooms, inside York's walls with, importantly, its own carpark. The breakfast is excellent and the dinners were good and ample. BUT on this trip, we took friends, rented two rooms, and were embarrassed by the condition of the place. The final straw was the evening we returned, hot and sweaty after walking York all day, and there was no water in the bathroom -- for a shower, for the toilet, or even to brush teeth! The "landlord" came up to verify (!) our complaint and tried to convince us it was due to street workers doing unannounced work. Baloney of course, since our friends' room had water, as did the rest of the building. Water miraculously returned a couple hours later. Recommendation: Visit the Swan for beer and dinner, but don't spend the night.

Room Tip: Don't stay in "the Cottage" room, it's noisy and the water supply is doubtful. Th...

Certainly one of the oldest and arguably one of the best on the (many) pubs in York. The setting (by the side of a main road) is not ideal, but there are two nice beer gardens at the rear and the interior of the pub is a real treat, so that more than makes up for it. A great sense of history here, with an excellent atmosphere, friendly staff and a good selection of well kept beers - again, amongst the best condition beers in York. Slightly off the beaten track, but well worth a visit.

We seeked this out. Kind people along the way giving directions..should've stayed lost..staff uninterested..no engagement..not great..had a look around. Has great potential..but like the staff couldn't be bothered..shame..short stroll from town centre..but wouldn't 'bother' pity..

York may have a lot of accommodation options, but we are so glad we chose this one. This is a wonderful historic property and the traditional features are here in abundance. The staff were very welcoming and obliging from the very moment we arrived, happily storing our luggage well before the official arrival time stated. The selection of real ales is commendable, and, as has already been observed the breakfasts are a real highlight. We have already recommended this stay to all of our friends.
