In York for the start of the 2014 Tour de France (well three days in the UK this year) and a group of us had a late lunch at the Brigantes. The pub is a typical English pub, had a good bar with a number of tasty brews on tap, and an adjoining dining room.

The food was impressive. For a pub there were a number of meals, not just sandwiches and everyone in the party (we all ordered different dishes) raved about the meal. The atmosphere in the pub was also good. Long story short - definitely worth eating there if you go York. We highly recommend it. jr

Recommended by the folks at York Brewery. The food was fine, well cooked and good value. Beer selection was extensive and unusual although there was no way we could try very much of it. Lots of US craft beers on the menu including some from the Founders Brewery in Grand Rapids Michigan which I sample quite often when over there.

There were not many punters in but the service was slow and a bit disjointed but we were in no particular hurry and we got served and billed eventually.

Nice place

After a fabulous day in Harrogate to see the Tour de France cyclists complete stage 1 we spent a miserable few hours waiting for a train back to York. By the time we arrived back in York it was almost 9pm and we were starving. Our B&B host had highlighted Brigantes on our map of the local area so we decided to give it a go. Although there was no room in the restaurant area and we were advised it might be a 40 minute wait for food we were warmly welcomed into the bar area. The wide range of contemporary beers was inviting but we decided on a cheeky Pinot Grigio to help us pass the time until food arrived. We didn't have so long to wait and we shared two different starters - nice hummous accompanied by pepper strips and celery and two fantastic small, warm loaves with oil and balsamic dressing plus a pesto-type dip as well. We both then had a huge portion of Toulouse sausage, cheesy mash and green beans. Great pub food and fantastic value for money.

We find it difficult to believe the small number of miserable reviews that this place has received. In a world full of cloned chain pubs, this is a charming exception. They serve an excellent range of proper beer, and extremely accomplished food which is well above standard pub fare.
Small portions? Well only if you are extremely greedy in our experience. We shared 2 mains between 3 of us and were very happliy replete. We go to York regularly - and will be returning here. It is a great place.

We visited as a large group, and had a great time. Food was excellent, all cooked to order and tasted really, really good. The choice is just about right, and for the price, I think one of the best pub type places I have eaten in for a long time (belly port around £12 - bargain!)

Puddings were also really good, try the cheesecake .. huge and to die for.

An excellent selection of real ales and very friendly and helpful staff ... Will certainly go back and would recommend anyone to go there (it is only a 5 min walk from the centre and well worth it!)
