This was our second visit as we enjoyed it so much the last time. Wonderful building and rooms up to five star standard - great spa and marvellous service at breakfast and in the grill room. The evening menu is limited but the salmon three ways was one of the best plates of food I have enjoyed. However we totally agree with the review below about the cold, unhelpful, uninterested receptionist who being the first port of call needs to be addressed. We too arrived at 1pm to be told no rooms until 3pm - no warmth and no engagement with us to soften the blow after a long journey - management need to sort this out!

Fantastic in every way from the moment we arrived until the moment we left! We were made to feel very special and with complimentary Molton Brown products in our room, what more could you ask for? Well worth the money, can't wait to go back! Perfect for a special occasion.

Check in was lengthy and I waited a good 15 minutes. The welcome was poor for a 5 star hotel.

The room was large and stylish with a good size bathroom. Molton Brown toiletries was a nice touch.

I went for a drink whilst I waited for my husband to arrive. £13.50 for a glass of Chardonnay is extortionate. The barman, Stephen was charming though and gave us a tour of the older parts if the hotel and seemed very proud to be an employee of the hotel.

Sleep quality was poor as I found the bed very uncomfortable. The pillows whilst soft were too small. The duvet was good quality.

The real issue was with breakfast. We arrived to be seated at 0930 and were told that there were no tables available and were asked to wait on the bar. There were at least 5 other couples waiting. I have never had to wait to be seated before at any hotel I have stayed in. After waiting for 15 minutes we decided not to bother and my husband left to go to work. On checkout I was not asked if I had enjoyed my stay however felt compelled to mention the issue with breakfast. The duty manager came over to apologise and refunded the cost of breakfast which I appreciated.

The building is beautiful however a lot needs to be done in terms of service to get this hotel anywhere near 5 star standard.

Elegant hotel, attentive staff. Enormous rooms used to be Railway company offices. Nice bathroom. Beware: no double glazing makes room hard to keep warm in very cold weather. Comfortable bars. Didn't eat in hotel as short walk from many restaurants of York.

This was our second stay at the hotel, the service and all the staff were perfect, the rooms were first class and spotless. Breakfast was superb and plentiful, there was only two negatives one We felt the "A la carte" menu was very limited and both my wife and I opted for the Grill menu and had steaks, which really we would not normally have done.
My only other issue was with the £20 per night parking charge, which was still applied even though the car was not taken to the NCP car park, but had been stored in the hotel basement.
If we had been staying longer I would have made alternative arrangements....£140.00 for a weeks parking !!!

Room Tip: Higher floors have less noise from outside, as the rooms are only single glazed .

Very poor quality sandwiches, felt like cheap budget bread and fillings minimal. Only one cracker on our table for 2. Macaroons were terrible, very very hard. We noticed that there were not enough nice cake stands to go around, think they visited Ikea for some of the round glass ones, they had more lean to them that the tower at Pisa. Also witnessed one of the waitresses spill hot coffee over another patron. The carols were nice though.

The only 5 Star Hotel in Yorkshire apparently. Really great location, good atmosphere. Staff very attentive. Afternoon Tea decent value. The main restaraunt serves excellent food but is very expensive with not truly a wide choice of options. No real Yorkshire Fayre, mostly good steaks and the normal baiscs [scallops, turbut, halibut, ...........]. BUT IT IS GOOD. Breakfast very expensive, but again good quality. Fantastic selection of whiskies. We would stay again which is the final arbitrator on value for money when it comes to the crunch. This hotel has only been opened about 4 yearsm and compared to the top 5 stars in London [Ritz, Claridges, ..] it has a wee way to go yet, but they have been around over 100 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
